I’m turning 30 in Feb. I am looking to run 50 miles on my birthday. Why 50? Probably because of Cool Hand Luke. Anyway I have been running pretty steady for over a year now building my long run to a consistent two to three hour run evey Saturday. I probably get in around 30 miles of running every week. My plan is to continue to increase my mileage for 3 weeks then rest for 1. Continuing to up my Saturday run to 5 hours. Then start in on my Sunday run instead of cycling. I figure I would just run off the bike till I built to about 2 hours of running then only run on Sunday’s. During the week I would run about 3 times maybe 4 anywhere from 40 to 90 minutes. Advice and suggestions are appreciated.

Advive - get it together before you turn 40!!
I had planned on doing a 50 (k, not miles) run this year when I turned 50, but between weather (February in Michigan) and leg injuries, I put it off and hadn’t thought about it again until your post.
I’d say be very wary of even the tiniest injury, err on the side of caution as you don’t want to go into the big run with marginal legs. If you can find a 50 mile ultra that’s feasible both geographically and timingwise, I’d say use that as the target run, since you’ll have a better support system from the organizers and other participants to supplement your friends and family.
Good luck and have fun,
Eric
I turn 30 on March 3rd (2008) and for my birthday, I’m taking the Bar exam! Does that count as an endurance event?
You win.
Several years ago I was out on a team ride in the area I’d grown up in (Maple Valley, WA). Anyway, as we’re tooling along, I see a guy I recognize running along the road (the dad of the girl who was valedictorian of my high school class – and he was going pretty fast). I go a little ways up the road, where I know his driveway is, and there’s his wife and a couple young kids (grandchildren, I assume) with a table on the side of the road, water, etc, cheering wildly. So I stop. As he gets there, I watch him hug his wife, and then pick up the kids… “Hey Mel, what’s up?”
“I just finished 60 miles on my 60th birthday.”
Wow. I gotta get busy.
A teacher from my high school did that on his 60th B-day, Imm all about it, Im just going to wait until im 50 to make it worth it. Just make sure you get in some long runs, maybe start figuring out a trail system you will use. i think its a great Idea, good luck. Post a RR!!!
I forget, but I believe I did 30 beer shots on my 30th birthday.
Congrats to your adventure. I’m hoping you have some company. Maybe tone it down to 30 miles and make it an annual deal and tack on one mile every calendar?
Have fun.
