49 year-old takes 20th at Olympic Marathon

2:17 on that course is really impressive. 2:40 back of Tergat.

There is still hope for all you oldies!

What about 44 year old Merlene Ottey running a touch over 11 seconds in the 100m semifinals. To me this is a greater achievement. As we all know, speed decreases with age, but endurance remains. Did Carlos Lopez not win the LA Olympic marathon at age 37. At the time, this was considered a breakthrough for the aging athlete.

That’s Lopes, not Lopez… like Fernandes, not Fernandez

Now after today’s portuguese lesson, I just wanted to add that I never find amazing when an athlete comes back from a doping infraction and competes again. It was like seeing Godina compete again this year! And I’m sure there are others. A suspension is just a great opportunity to continue training without the possibility of being tested! Yep, I’m for lifetime bans.

a touch above 11 seconds, male of female with or without dope at age 44 is still pretty incredible. Thanks for the lesson, I was unsure if it was Lopes or Lopez

I’ve been a fan of Merlene’s since she ran for Nebraska in the early 80’s. I think she’s been to every Olympics since Moscow. Amazing.
