Why do you have to have a Kona qualifying goal at this point when…you are just starting? You state biking is your weakest and you have a FTP of 250+? Something is wrong here.
5-7 hours of running per week is a recipe for an injury at 205 pounds in my opinion.
FTP is about 2.6 w/kg.
Good on you and welcome to the dark side!
I learned the hard way when I started in sport and focused EVERYTHING around KQ’ing rather than enjoying the moment and appreciating the process! I starting KQ’ing when I shifted my mindset and actions to the later!
Goodluck in your journey!

The FTP isn’t crazy. Still under 3 w/kg. Agree that it’s crazy to make Kona a 2 year goal without any IM experience. In that AG, using TX as an example because of races mentioned, you’d have to be sub 9.
As a bigger guy myself, I’ll also have to agree that 5-7 hours of running seems like an injury waiting to happen.

FTP according to Coggan is Fair / Undertrained region … lots of potential here for the OP to improve!
You have a swim background so you are already ahead of the game. Build the run slow. Try to drop some weight. Hammer the bike. Don’t let the naysayers crush your dreams. I would race lots of short stuff first before going long.

Still asking a lot to improve to KQ by 2022. Think he should get the first IM out of the way, then asses whether it’s a goal or not. Speaking from someone the same size (6’4" 210 lbs). Going to need a flat and fast course (TX, AZ, FL) and be able to run MUCH faster, even with a good bike. His numbers aren’t starting from scratch either, he’s got 3 years of cardio base with crossfit.

Edited the original post to reflect 3 years out, really wanted to shoot for the 45-49 age group.
Also agree it’s a long shot, but I need something to motivate me long term. Short term I’m in agreement with you both. Finish an IM, get the FTP up, lose weight. No arguments from me.

I just bought a bike in May and started a program at the end of July. My guess is that I should have no issues with getting above 300 on the FTP, Biggest thing is losing weight

Gotcha. As long as you don’t make it about KQ’ing alone, I think you’ll be fine. Think setting KQ as your only goal so soon in would lead to burnout. Best of luck and look forward to following along

Definitely not all about the KQ. I live in reality and the amazing talent in this sport is not lost on me. No illusions of being a world beater.
Sounds like a good plan! If you do the work you can achieve the goal

And the other problem is KQ out of your control; you may be in your best fitness, perfect race & if the wrong 3-4 guys show up, it won’t get you to Hawaii. Control what you can control and you will enjoy the sport. Perseverate on what you can’t control, and this sport will drive you crazy.
WK 33, Aug 12-18:
Swim: None
Bike: 1X, 0:45min
Run: 4X, 2:26 / 17mi.
Summary: Not much training this week as I’ve moved from 1 vacation to the 2nd one. Between flights and 11 hr road trips, workouts are limited. Next week we go home and I’ll be able to do some cycling and swimming prior to starting the planned training on the 26th.
Swim: Tried swimming in the ocean (Destin) but that was a major fail. 3 minutes of being thrown around in waves resulted in 0 yards per the garmin. Then the GPS said it was ready and logged a whopping 125 yards after another 5 minutes. Gave up due to motion sickness and salt water intake.
Bike: Got 1 workout in between trips. Tried doing the recumbent at the hotel but 45 min was enough to test my patience.
Run: Lots of opportunity to run in Destin. Nice beaches and minimal traffic.
WK 34, Aug 19-25:
Swim: 2X, 4k, 1:09
Bike: 3X, 71mi 3:30
**Run: 6X, 22.5mi, 3:10. **
Total: 11, 7:50
Weight: 206
** Signed up for Houston Marathon in Jan 2020.
Summary: Made it back from vacation. Ate the last bit of crap like fried shrimp, cake, and lots of booze. Ready to tackle the upcoming week and get back in the routine.
Swim: Long easy swim, 4x500’s with 1`min rest for main set, zone 2. 1150 straight for other main set. Felt ok, easy pace at 1:24/min
Bike: Was able to add a few easy rides in on the trainer including a 2hr ride on Sunday. Although FTP was low, my body is not used to the long time in aero/saddle. But was sore around the 1:30 mark…
Run: Running felt good but developed a light strain in the lower calf area. Decided to take off Sun in addition to my usual Monday.

Worst idea I’ve read on ST today and that’s saying a lot
Not sure if you’re serious or joking but it makes sense to do a marathon before I try any kind of Ironman race.
Probably will do a half in November.
