404/disc or 808/1080 - which combo is faster on rolling terrain?

Title sums it up more or less, but trying to decide which combo is faster for the IMKY course. Does the disc offset the shallower front wheel of the 404? Rider weight, 162lbs. Looking at a 5:20 or 5:30 bike split.

Going to rent either the 808/1080 combo, or borrow a mates 404 and rent a rear disc.

Appreciate any input.

Ignore the weight.

Out of all those wheels, the disc is the fastest on the back, the 1080 on the front.

The weight won’t slow you down at all overall so don’t even think about it.

The only issue is wind and handling of the front wheel, so that can guide you.

Why not hire rear disc and 1080 or 808 front. That is fastest option.

But if you really are limited to one of those choices over the other I honestly don’t think either is that significantly different so just get the cheapest and spend the money you save on taking a day off work without pay and doing a hard race simulation training day.

Cost is the limiter, and racedaywheels don’t have any clincher discs left apparently (no experience with tubies, something i really should remedy). Eshappe equipment want too much for a deep front in addition to the disc i would be renting from them since they have some available. $145 for the 808/1080 from RDW. Or $120 for a HED disc from Eshappe (404 is a mates wheel for free).

Oh ok, so not much price difference… hard call, I honestly don’t think either one is going to be significantly better then the other so go with what you are most comfortable with.

You might be comfortable riding a disc, you might not really want to borrow equipment etc…

Honest, don’t let the performance difference (if any) between the two sets decide as they are both faster then normal training wheels and so close you’ll never know the difference. So just do what allows your mind to be the most relaxed and at ease with your decision.

I’ve ridden the 404/900 disc combo the last 2 yrs at IMWI, and I think it is a very good set-up for a rolling course. If you don’t have experience handling an 808 or 1080 front in windy conditions, the deeper dish wheel could actually slow you down. I would play it safe with the 404 in the front.

I wouldn’t be afraid of an 808 or 1080 front for IM Wisconsin. My combination last year was a rented 808 front along with my own 404 with a wheel cover. I had only ridden an 808 once before and had no trouble dealing with the wind, and there was some last year.

FWIW

I am not an expert, but i would think since the front wheel is more important, that the 808/1080 would be faster than the 404/disc. I think the 1080 and 808 set up is a tad lighter too. I would be interested also to hear the toughts of the aero gurus out there. It looks like hte winds will be very light in LOU so the 808 might be the way to go.

i would go with an 808/disc

1080 for an ironman distance race is probably madness.

youll be tired as hell, and a gust of wind should it arise would be a pain to handle

I have never ridden a disk, but I don’t understand how a 1080 would be more susceptible/more influenced to cross winds than the disk?

It seems like the difference between holding shirt compared to an umbrella-in the wind.

im sorry i meant using an 1080up front would be mad

which I now realize that nobody was considering anyway.

definitely use a disc in the rear

and a 404 or 808 depending on rider weight/speed and wind.
