Talking Heads - “Once in lifetime”
Now this is OT - perhaps my favourite pop/rock tune of all time. It’s a timeless piece of music that sounds as fresh today as when David Byrne wrote it 25 years ago. I have it throbbing through my head right now! The whole Album, Remain in Light, is one of those outstanding start-to-finish albums were every track is a standout, in my mind.
Fleck, I have no idea who you are, but anybody with a passion for Byrne or The Heads is cool in my book.
To be accurate the name of the band is Talking Heads … the Heads were a one-off project that included Jerry Harrison with Tom Tom Club … essentially Talking Heads without David Byrne …
You know who else is a big David Byrne fan??? Yep, that’s right … Marla Streb.
I was coming back from school in 1977 and we stopped in Boston for a night of liquid refreshment and wildness. We were on our way back from a bar and all of the rather odd looking people started to come out from a club/bar with colored hair and mohawks. This was WAY before punk got big so we had no idea what the hell was going on. We asked them what show they had seen and they said…The Talking Heads. We all laughed and thought that was real funny what a bunch of loosers.
The Talking Heads were, as some have called them one of the most influential bands to have ever come along. Admitedly Byrne was the driving creative force behind the music. For example the African and World Beat rythmns on Remain in Light, were at least 10 years ahead of their time and as I mentioned, still sound fresh and contemporary to this day - the ultimate test of how “good” a piece of music is in my books.
On October the 7th 1996, the first album by The Heads, No Talking Just Heads came out on RadioActive/MCA records in Europe. The US version followed one day later.
The Heads are Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison and Tina Weymouth and are NOT Talking Heads, as David Byrne had other things to do.
To compensate for the lack of a permanent singer, every song on the album is sung by another artist who not only wrote and sung the lyrics, but also made the arrangements. The production of the album is done by the three Heads themselves.
