Are these compatible? or are some extensions 22mm and some actually 22.2mm ?
I want to raise my hand position a little from the S bends…

bump for the AM crowd
.
Well, the HED website says 22mm but 22.2 is standard size
but then Trisports says HEDs are 22.2 too
Now I’m confused too
Not a mistral, but the hed lazy s extensions fit just fine in my brezza aerobar.
difference is .2 mm anyway. that’s literally about a hair width.
almost everybody’s using 22.2mm now. i’ve got some new HED bars on the way to me, i’ll check when they arrive. but, to my knowledge, the last company using 22.0mm was zipp and that was changed a couple of years ago. i’d guess everybody with removable extensions is at 22.2mm.
It’s a holdover from the days of Standard. 22.2mm = 7/8". That’s why it’s 22.2mm. This caught Zipp offguard when they made the VukaAero initially. “Why on earth would it be 22.2? That can’t be right. It must be 22.0…” And that’s why the VukaAero never fit anyone else’s extensions (until the redid the collets).
But everyone is 22.2. Why? Because 7/8" OD tubing was REALLY common when aerobars were first being made. And it just stuck…
Are you putting the HED Lazy S extension in a mistral base bar? That should be fine. I’ve done it before and it has worked well.
Going the other way isn’t as easy. I just had a hell of a time putting a set of profile design 22.2mm extenstions in a HED clip-lite clamp. It took time, a little bit of lube and light tapping of a rubber mallet to get it all in place. The HED extension that was replaced has an O.D. of 22mm and slid in and out with ease. I guess that extra .2mm does make a difference!
slightly off topic but I’m thinking about getting the 3t mistral and I was wondering if there was a big drop between the pads and the extensions since they are below the base bar. If you were in the aero position would your arms be angled down slightly or are they level? I was thinking there would be a larger drop than normal and I’m considering the lazy s or ski bend if I do get the mistral.
It keeps your forearms flat… Its level…I just want to change hand position…
Yes, it is quite a drop. Your wrists will likely be bent downwards. To have a level or slightly upwards overall hand position, you will likely have to tilt the bars up a bit. A ski bend will allow a bit more flexibility. Or, see my next few sentences as well.
To the original question. I am sure the HED LazyS will work. 3T also makes a deeper bend aluminum extension that will work well. It was originally for a set of their clip on bars. It has a pretty deep/tall S bend.
