310XT firmware upgrade available

For all those early 310 adopters who like me have been suffering with corrupted files, download issues and the like:

Hopefully this solves some of the problems and frustrations!

Interesting…

Tried to install Garmin Communicator on my MacPro, but Test Page indicates that no device is found. Garmin Ant Agent works perfectly and certainly downloads the data as expected.

Could be that I recently upgraded OS to Snow Leopard. Anyone else have issues?

This was the update that I was waiting for, however, it still hasn’t sorted the issue that I have with uploading my user profile info.

Cejohnst, are you able to change your user profile training zones (e.g. pace) in Garmin Training Centre, then create a new workout using these zones, upload to the watch and see the same training zones on the watch as you set in GTC?

I cannot for the life in me get this to work…I’ve pretty much given up on the watch to be fair. :frowning: or at least this aspect of training with it.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

No, I haven’t gotten deeper into those functions yet. Truth be told when I wasn’t even able to download workout data properly I was reluctant to put too much time into figuring out the other options.

I’ll drop you a line if I get it working.

chad.

Not sure about snow leopard but Flip4Mac WMV causes a conflict with garmin communicator.

Googling Flip4Mac garmin communicator should help.

Update does not work, I’m running Snow Leopard. Device is recognized but firmware update is failing ;-(

Aside from this issue are people reasonably happy with the 310XT?

Do you use it for power? Multisport? How does it transition from swim to bike to run?

Is it good on a day to day basis?

Sounds like this product software is a dud! Is it really worth it to shell out the $350 to get something you can also swim in or just stick to the $150 model?

If you want it just to “swim in”, then no. It’s not worth it.

If, however, you want it for it’s ability to record ANT+ power data, better/faster satellite lock, longer battery life, vibrate instead of just beep, some of the other newer features, then yes it definitely worth it.

My only gripe with it is the odd decision to make it only xfer data to host computer via ANT+. This is currently not working so well in my experience. Though, this issue is one that can be corrected ( hopefully ) via software updates to the ANT Agent software and/or the firmware on the 310.

The 305 cradle has 3 contact points for the USB link. The 310 charging clip has 2 contact points, but only charges, does not transfer data. You have to plug it into USB to charge it, but you’re forced to use a slower/problematic data transfer via ANT+. That was stupid IMHO. Add a 3rd contact point to the back of the unit and let the ‘clip’ function just like the 305 cradle used to. Presto, you’ve now solved 95% of the complaints with the 310.

couldn’t agree more with that statement

Have it working fine on Snow Leopard with the beta Garmin Communicator plugin - link is on the Garmin Forums. Using it with Firefox whatever the latest version is. This is on an iMac 2.4GHz 24"

When you don’t experience the problems others have it’s hard to see what’s wrong. We have 2 310s, replacing 305s, and think they’re great. No problems uploading activities or downloading information to the devices. There are a number of differences and improvement over the 305, but probably the best is the vibration alert. When used with workouts, it’s much easier to keep track of pacing or whatever is being used to regulate training, as the vibration can be felt in situations where the audible alarm cannot be heard.

Sure there are some issues with the software, but nothing we’ve seen to be a show stopper. We had 1 ANT USB stick play up - it would work on the Mac but not on a PC. Just sent it back to the retailer and got a replacement. We were fortunate to have 2 USB sticks for troubleshooting. It might have been more challenging otherwise. Does make you wonder though how many of the problems people are having with ANT communications might lie with the hardware, ie the USB stick, and not the software.

Received this from Garmin today 9/3/09:

Dear Slowtwitcher
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Unfortunately, the plugin all together is not working properly with Snow Leopard. Our engineers are currently working on a fix to get this working with Snow Leopard.

Because I use SportTracks I also have the ANT agent working through Windoze under Parallels. If that is an option you might want to look at that route. In my experience, it works fine both ways.

There is a problem with Parallels (and I understand VMWare too) not allowing Windoze to see the ANT agent unless the .kext driver is unloaded from OS X. Unplug the ANT stick and run this command in a Terminal window
Sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/SILabsUSBDriver.kext
while Windoze is starting up un Parallels When Windoze is up, plug in the ANT stick and you’ll be fine.

To switch back run
Sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/SILabsUSBDriver.kext
in a Terminal window
I understand this problem does not exist if you boot into Windoze from Boot Camp.

I’ve reported this to Garmin, here’s the exchange so far:

Mr. xyz,
I’m sorry, but the problem has not yet been corrected. We recently
released a software update for the Forerunner 310XT (version 2.60), but
it does not correct this issue.

GENIUS!!! I salute you!

I’ve tried exiting ANT Agent, but that didn’t work. Perhaps ANT Agent should unload the kernel extension when it exits… Time to contact Garmin to find out why it doesn’t ( or can’t ).

I upgraded my 310XT on Tuesday. It had worked well for a month before the upgrade. The upgrade went well and seemed to load correctly. I am on a Mac still running Leopard. I used it for a run the next day and it worked during the run without any glitches. After I plugged it into the charger at the end of the run though, it totally died. Absolutely no response with soft or hard resets. Have had e-mail exchanges with Garmin and I believe they are going to authorize a warranty return for repairs (but it has taken then 3 days to get me the authorization). Today they wanted verification that it was still under warranty (bought less than a year ago). I wanted to poke them and point out that its only been for sale now for about 3-months! I did dutifully e-mail them a copy of my receipt from August.

Thanks bigdeal - much appreciated. I’ve just got my new wireless SRMs and am looking to pair them up with the 310XT - so fingers crossed!!!

Hello cejohnst and All,

I walked through the 310 upgrade with Garmin Support on the firmware from 2.2 to 2.6 and was unsuccessful.

I use Vista 32 on the computer we were working with.

We could get as far as ‘file uploaded to ANT’ but it would not transfer to the watch.

We also got a message the the server was down and he suggested that the file sent from Garmin was corrupted.

Also on my Dashboard I would get the message that I should use Webupdater but Garmin Support assured me that that was an error and Webupdater only works with USB plug in devices and does not work for updates with 310 using ANT+.

Support suggested trying again in a week or two.

All other functions seem to work OK including uploading runs with map and heart rate data.

Cheers,

Neal

I did the firmware upgrade last night. Went for a ride this morning. Now today’s ride doesn’t appear in Garmin Training Center. It downloaded because all of the screens cleared out to zero but nothing shows up. Any ideas?

I’m on an iMac running Leopard.
