Been 3 weeks since I started riding a modified road bike to work with my PC’s.
As I was coming in today, I was thinking that it now feels like normal riding.
Meaning, I do not have to think about it much anymore. I also am starting to get in the aerobar
position more, even though I am far from a long time in this position yet.
How are other new PC users doing? Since it is off season, time to try new stuff in
training.
Have you been running much recently? wondered if you’d seen further improvements in that or if the running benefits level off once you have adapted the hip flexors.
Will never be able to prove anything. I just do know that I ran the fastest half marathon in my
life on Sunday. Not bad setting a PR at 50. I assume my total training package has allowed me to improve.
I have averaged 12 miles a week running for the year. (Largest weekly was about 20, so you can see
I have had some real real low weeks also.)
Again, I have no idea what is going on. I was just offering that riding outside is not as bad
as I always thought. I had never gotten to the point riding them on my indoor trainer
that I felt like they were just regular cranks. I never thought I could get into the aerobars,
but have been able to some now. So, is training what ever muscles that were not used by
any other training worth it? Again, who knows, and for ST, it CAN NEVER BE PROVEN.
But, for some of us who are willing to try new stuff, was trying to just share data with them,
but, we know how that goes.
cool. i just started using mine again because my run has been getting slower and slower since i moved to FL and have to run in the heat I did note last winter my running in the hills in CT was quicker than ever after indoor PC usage and limited running.
I also noticed that my re-adaptation in the last few weeks was MUCH better than starting out fresh and I feel closer to “normal” than i did last winter. I have decided to commit myself to at least one PC session indoors in place of a run session year round from now on since i don’t have treadmill access and I typically am running too slow outside to keep a good turn over for racing in more moderate climbs…whether this works or not I don’t know but it does help at least my mental state!
Thats kinda what I decided to try and do this year, give it one off season to really make the effort to use them, and then see how my races go next season.
I know when I was hurt this summer and could do zero run training, I was doing PCs instead. At races, my run times were still decent, so again, who knows,
but at least the mental aspect of thinking it was helping me was there.
Everytime I restart the PC use, it is MUCH easier than the first time, which sounds the same as your experience. Have you used your PC’s outside?
Not sure I will ever the guts to try any big hills, but on my flat ride to work, I have at least finally gotten over the mental hurdle.
i used them outside a couple of times last winter but since I moved to Miami I do a lot of riding on my CT to avoid dealing with traffic. When I go outside it’s either for my long ride on my tri bike or 1-2 hrs on my fixie.
I like the contradiction of riding both a fixie and PCs for different sessions - it might sound funny but I think they actually help each other! That said - i consider my PCs as more of a running tool than for cycling
Yep, I do NOT like traffic. I use my PC’s just to ride to work. I use my regular tri bike when I do the hill training.
Working on getting another road bike setup on my CT, so I can move the PC’s from my comute bike to CT bike easily.
As Chad and Dev have stated, doing a 50/50 between PC’s and regular cranks is what I thought they currently do.
Hi H2OFun. I think it is depends on time of year, but in the summer, I do Sat, Sun, Wed on regular cranks and Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri commute on PC’s. The split is around 8-12 hours regular cranks plus 5-6 on PC’s, so more skewed to regular cranks. At this time of year it is more like 3-4 hours on regular cranks and 4-6 on PC’s commute, so more time on PC’s than regular cranks. Frequency with PC’s is always higher as there are typically 8 sessions per week given that commuting 4 days is two ways per day.
Curious about if you feel you are working harder on the bike with the PCs?
Let us know how your running goes. I found these helped my runs, specially my bricks…Seemed I was running faster sooner off the bike with fewer adjustment problems.
thanks
