3 Female Cyclist hit today in Boulder on Foothills/36

Anyone know anything more about this accident? Who and how they are doing?

No, but this news report indicates the southbound SUV driver was clearly at fault when he swerved across the oncoming northbound lane and onto the northbound side shoulder (seriously?) to pass another southbound vehicle that had slowed to turn right into a private drive.

Take a look at the mangled bikes in the picture to the right. I hope they’re all doing okay.

Hope they all recover. And I hope the reckless driver is adequately penalized for his reckless actions ( jail time , loss of license for a very long time).

Here’s to a quick and complete recovery with no races jeopardized.

I don’t know why I read the comments. It is shocking to me that some people lose the ability to grasp that a human life could be lost when a cyclist is hit by a car.

Yeah it is ridiculous isn’t it.

Doesn’t shock me anymore. Fewer and fewer people nowadays really value anybody elses’ life but their own.

I’m still amazed how little value people put on someone else’s life just to arrive someplace 30 seconds sooner.

How aero would it be if the guys on ‘Sons of Guns’ rigged up something on the front of my P2?

The craziest part is the complete and utter lack of any reading comprehension skills. For those posting anti-cyclist comments, it is clear they either didn’t read the article or they didn’t have a clue what was written.

I hope the cyclist in critical condition pulls through!!!

I don’t think they care- any accident involving a bike is fodder for them to argue all bikes need to get off the road and out of their way.

I know some people post words that seem anti-cyclist, but I view this differently. Cycling is ranked as the most dangerous sport in the world. Not dangerous like rock climbing without a harness, but dangerous in the sense that as a percentage and as a total more people get hurt cycling that any other sport. Many of us view riding a motorcycle as crazy because it involves riding exposed in automobile traffic. Cycling is no different from riding a motorcycle. It is almost insane to ride our bikes on busy roads with cars, trucks, and the like, moving very quickly, and yet we do it, and yet we are surprised when we get hit by a car. Cars just don’t see bikes, cars can’t time the speed of bikes. Nobody seems surprised when a motorcyclist gets hit by a car, when riding a bike is just as risky. How about a pedestrian walking on the side of a busy road? Anyone who has ever seen someone walking on the side of a busy road knows that person is looking to get hit by a car. You want to put your life at risk? Ride a bike on a busy highway.

deep breath… deep breath… i’m gonna agree with YaHey… wooo okay.

I fully agree. I had a crotch rocket for a few years until I sold it to pay of some other stuff I had. Anyways, my dad was always worried about me killing myself on it and I really struggled to get the point across to him that biking on the roads are infinetly more dangerous than riding a motorcycle. At least you are going the speed of traffic with a motorcycle, and for the most part when I road I had full gear on. Contrast that with a bike and it isn’t even on the same level. But he still is cool with me riding my bike down the highway but would be scared shitless if I got a motorcycle again… go figure.

I hope that these ladies are all okay. Everybody who cycles around Boulder knows that area well, and if you ride on the shoulder it is not considered unsafe. In fact, I would bet that it is one of the most biked roads in the US. I remember a few years ago when a cyclist was killed near that stretch of road after a high school kid fell asleep at the wheel and veered across the center line and onto the shoulder.

No excuse for the stupid comments, but the Daily Camera updates articles or changes them completely and leaves the comment thread untouched. So many comments were made this morning when there were little to no details about the accident, and they now either don’t make sense or are being read out of context because the article has changed.

That being said, I feel like the two most common comments made after online news articles in Colorado are either anti-bicycle or anti-government. And it’s almost always the same angry posters in both cases. But further discussion on that probably belongs in the Lavender Room.

I’m still amazed how little value people put on someone else’s life just to arrive someplace 30 seconds sooner.

We should probably give the benefit of the doubt to the driver and figure he didn’t look and had no idea cyclists were there. Which makes his move even more stupid. He hit three people who had no idea he’d swerve into them. He could also have hit an incoming car in the other lane. As “bad” as having to slow behind someone who’s turning in front of you… staying in your lane unless you clearly have checked the incoming lane is smart.

Here’s to a speedy and complete recovery for the riders! Those mangled bicycles really look bad, it must have been quite the hit :frowning:

I also agree with YaHeY as well with one small condition. I think I’m much safer on my motorcycle. I always where full gear, full face helmet and clothing designed to protect me from impact with body armor. On my bike I have a little foam cap on my head and a think layer of Lycra, yet cyclist say I’m on a donor cycle for riding a MOTO. Odd.

I hope these ladies a fast recovery and hope for the best.

+1 - I was on crotch rockets for years - urban traffic, cross-country, everywhere - and never, in my worst close call, felt as frightened as on a bicycle. On a motorcycle I had my protective clothing, yes, but also full mirror coverage and the horsepower to squirt out of tight spots in the blink of an eye. With judicious use of the throttle (ie. not speeding)(a large part of the time, that is) I was usually able to “come upon” automobiles and thereby be in more control of the situation, not have them come upon me. I hate having to blindly rely on everything working out “perfectly” when I am on a bicycle. To that end, I joined my city’s bicycle committee to try to link up our bike lane network & make things a tad safer in my neck of the woods. << not looking to start up any flame wars either!

Still missing my GPz1100…

It’s up to the law.

The depth of anti-cyclist sentiment is what is tragic. These comments are just typical of what cyclists face on the road every day. Instead of seeing bikes as one less car on the road, they see bikers as evil, or worse, as ‘prey’.

Oh, most excellent to hear of your pro-active approach! Too bad more won’t follow suit. We need ‘boots’ on the ground…

There is no point, as with any of my posts. But that was somewhat juvenile of me. Those that want to be rabble-rousers will find a way without my making things any easier. As such, I’ll remove my post. If you would kindly edit your quoted reply we shall wash our hands of any misbehavior.

What is the point of your post?

Hope they all recover. And I hope the reckless driver is adequately penalized for his reckless actions ( jail time , loss of license for a very long time).
