I have DT swis 190 ceramic hubs and want to build up some balls wheels for my 29er. I was thinking of going with the stans ARCH rims Anybody have any experience with these rims? or with building 29er wheelsets? FWIW, I have Crossmax 29 wheels (mavic c29ssmax). But I have these hubs that need to get built or sold.
AND…what tires? I need to build up some wheels this winter for my 29er (single speed)…I have done some searches, and on the MTN forums - you bastards think this place is bad? Try asking about 29er (26" folks HATE them - who knew?)…then call you a “fucking newbie trail hazard” and other nice things. Then, when you admit to being on a “cheap fucking poser Redline” when not racing “faggot spandex triathlon”…you still dont get a real answer as to what tires one would suggest.
(What I posted is that I was looking for tires - after I did a search or 10 on the web. Was thinking of tubeless but not certain and spent most of my time on a Tri bike but was just loving the 29er and going off road)
I like tubeless, it seems to work well even here in goathead city. I have been enjoying the schwable racing ralphs as well as the geax sagguaro TNTs. but its also hard to beat a nevegal/sb8 combo.
I like my Arch rims, but I like my 355 rims even better and they shave some rotating weight with no discernable reliability issues.
As for winter tires, bigger is better and the schwable racing ralph 2.4 has the largest casing out there at the moment. THat said there are some new fatboy tires coming down the line. Some WTB weirwolfs would also do the trick for a snow tire, but pick them up fast as WTB ain’t making them for 2010.
and for future reference this is a pretty 29er friendly crew.
I’ve had Stan’s Arch rims laced to Stan’s ZTR hubs for only a few months but they have been excellent running tubeless with a Racing Ralph front/ Kenda Karma rear. The Arch’s are a little more substantial and more of an every day wheel than the 355, which is considered a race only wheels for riders over 155 lbs. You can go to the Stan’s websight and get all the information you need.
Right now I’m riding my Kestrel Talon again. I haven’t ridden it all summer, staying on the Niner, but after landing on my head Sunday and cracking the helmet right across the front, I’m giving my brain a rest.l
Slight tangent here… I was looking at a DT190 build at some point past, and I thought I read it was 10-spd only like the original DA 7800 instead of the standard shimano 8/9/10 (had the deeper splines for the softer/lighter cassette body)… Could be wrong or maybe it’s changed since, but if not then that’d be an issue running it w/ a typical MTB drivetrain since XT/XTR are still 9-spd. Still too early for me to be up this a.m. so maybe I’m not thinking clearly, though.
I’ve run my Arch rims for over a year and they have been nothing short of awesome. I ran Panaracer Ramages until recent switching to Continental Mountain King 2.4 both tubeless. They just roll so much better. I’m a single speeder too. My build besides the Arch rims are Hope Pro 2 single speed hubs. They have been great too. They freewheel kind of loud but you should be pedaling anyway.
