29er tires

I’m looking to buy a 29er tire, any suggestions?

Hugh at True North in Waterloo seems to be building plenty of 29er’s. You may want to check with him and see what he recommends since he may actually have some in stock.

Good call. I’ll give Hugh a visit

I just put a deposit down on the new Ellsworth Evolve (their entry in to the the 29" cult), one of my concerns had been tire selection. My dealer showed me many different options from reputable manufacturers. Check out www.biketiresdirect for a host of good ones.

The Crow tire by NoTubes. If I recall correctly, it’s made by Kenda and is very similar to a Karma but with smaller knobs. Eddie Arnet of MtBA loves them as do some other guys I’ve talked to.

.

what sorta 29er tire you ,looking for ?

crow’s are fast, sketchy - same as the kenda kharma’s.

good speed and all-around include the spec fasttrak, and the venerable nanoraptor and surprisingly quick maxxis ignitor. lots of guys use a nano rear / ignitor front. 29er ultra-legend mike curiak hooked me up with that combo and it is rerally all i ever needed.

dunno much about beefier ones.

superfast guys will use the 1.8 bonti’s. those are almost a cross tire tho. i use them in the mud.

i am waiting for the new small block 8 from maxxis or kenda or whoever - that thing looks nice.

obviusly, the super-active board at mtbr.com will give you more than you ever hope to know on the subject.

Excellent suggestion. Thx

Kenda, and if it’s like the 26 tire it will be a good fast hard-pack tire

Short answer… I have no idea. I’m brand new to this 29er stuff, but open minded & willing to learn. The application is for riding below freezing on road, snow & some ice.

yeah, i think that small block 8 is gonna be sweet.

Hands down…

WTB Nanoraptor 29 x 2.1

Thx

I went to the WTB website & I could only find the Inter Wolf & Cross Wolf. Am I looking in the right place or is this 2007 product?

It’s a fast XC tire. If you’re riding obsurdly muddy stuff, you’ll either need a different tire or drop your PSI (they do clear very well).

brief 29er lore here - the nanoraptor is known as " the tire ". it is the tire which started the modern 29er movement. the specifics are vague, and much argued but they involve mark slate of WTB, and wes williams of ibis fame getting them to put the thing together. wes had been building the the wheeled bikes after leaving ibis out in crested butte under the willits brand using some weird euro-size tire, and was trying like heck to get people to listen to him on how great they were ( the concept, not the tire ).

originally they were go go with a beefier tire, but slate got them to go with the faster nano tread. the rest is history.

lots of other choices out there nowadays, but the nano is still pretty dang nice. biggest gripe from most is a tendancy to slide a bit sideways on log crossings. hence the pairing with a ignitor front for many savvy 29er riders.

There are ots of choices today, compared to this date last year. It depends on your 29’er usage, and conditions. The Bontrager Jones XR is a reasonable choice for all conditions, and made in two widths…cost and availability are decent in comparison to other brands.

You should post that on the mtbreview.com 29er forum, the guys there are pretty hardcore.
