275$ for retul fit?

a certified retul ‘fitter guy’ is coming to my area and will do a fit for 275$ i got fitted a few years back at my LBS and basically for 70$ the guy told me a needed a shorter stem, which i did, and got. i feel like i have a good fit right now as im biking well and running well off the bike…but i heard great things about retul…whould i fork over the dough? also…the fit would take place in oct and im doing clearwater in nov…would that be too close to a big race to make any changes? any opinions?

Retul as well as any other fit is based off of the fitters analysis of the athlete and also their ability to properly find the referance points from the body and properly place the marks. Fit is dynamic which Retul is, but again it is usually the interpretation of the fitter to properly utilize what he or she know and can “feel” from you. Retul is a great tool to be utilized with a standard fit as well as an assessment of flexibility and history from the fittee. No, if you feel fine you most likely are… fitters generally move things because they can (usually ego) and still get you in the proverbally green. Just post how is my fit on the forums and usually the slowtweeters will tell you what they think and any person can be shown where the referance points are and get pretty dead on in the fit world.

Definitely can be well worth the money depending on the fitter. The money I spent on my professional fit was well worth it and included a lot of discussion as well as use of Retul. As mentioned, though, Retul is just a tool used by the fitter to help get you a good fit. Do some research into the fitter and try to get some feedback. If he is FIST certified go to the ST fitters database and read the reviews.

As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Its in the ballpark of fitters in my area doing Retul fitings. I myself am doing it since a little more speed is worth it. I honestly can’t say that I would expect more comfort for me since I’m extremely comfortable on my bike bike but I hate the thought that I might not be in the best position for creating power and aerodynamics.

Gee, I didn’t know Retul was also a wind tunnel or CFD program. Seriously, such a “fit system” cannot tell you if you are in the best position for aero. If you really want to know the best position for best speed (i.e., the tradeoff of aero vs. power), field test.

$275 for someone’s opinion while using a cheap goniometer?

You can do the same thing with a camera. I wouldn’t do it but a fool and his money is soon parted.

HUH? That’s not a cheap goniometer you’re talking about and using a camera is a static fit.

While it all depends on who the fitter is and how good he/she is, Retul gives a hell of a lot of insight to the right fitter.

I had a retul fit, and while the technology was pretty impressive - my fitter was not. I agree that you need to check out the credentials of the fitter before making this investment - - maybe he/she can give you some references to contact?

It’s obvious that our opinions differ.

It’s cheap compared to what I use and for $275 someone better get a money back guarantee.

My camera does video so it’s not static.

If they don’t improve by something like 5% then the previous fit wasn’t that bad in comparison.

I think our opinions are similar actually.

I just disagree that a retul system is a cheap goniometer. They are in the ball park of $10,000.

You can get a fit that is every bit as good as a great retul fit by someone using a cheap (comparably) goniometer who knows what the hell is up. Chris Bohannon, formerly of the Serotta fit institute is a great example of someone who doesn’t need a retul system to nail down an amazing fit.
