24 hour treadmill run by Christopher Bergland in NYC!

For you New Yorkers out there Chris Bergland is currently doing a 24 hour treadmill run in the window at Kheils on 2nd Avenue and 13th Street. He’s an amazing Triple Ironman winner and all around enlightened guy. Stop by Kheils and check out this most incredible athlete.

There’s a great piece about him here:

Now I know what to say when people accuse me of being nuts.

I just got back from watching Chris Bergland and Co. doing the 24 hour treadmill run and noticed they were all drinking Pedialyte. Anyone have experience with this beverage in endurance situations? I guess it’s full of electrolytes but why not consume something more specifically geared for endurance?

Most importantly: they are doing this 24 hour run to support YouthAIDS HIV/AIDS prevention programs around the world. For more info: www.youthaids.org.

God bless 'em.

Chris in fact did break the record this morning at 8:00 a.m. running 153.76 miles over the 24 hours.

Pedialyte is well known among the ultra crowd due to the amount of electrolytes it throws back in you per serving size. While not its intended use, some people swear by the stuff.

Has anyone tried Pedialyte during a HI or IM yet? And if so how or what were the results? problems?

Pedialyte…is that not the stuff that you give infants when they are dehydrated from diahrrea and lack eletrolytes and need to be topped up. If I recall, this stuff tastes disgusting, but does work. We had some kicking around the house 5 years ago and I tried it after a ride and almost puked up. Perhaps the flavour has improved, if not, it would be quite hard to take in during an Ironman !

yep thats the stuff…tastes like shit…I agree but after reading about it in the forum decided to ask anyway about it. Guess I may stick with my tried a true regimen…LOL

My understanding is that you would not use Pedialyte for electrolyte replacement over these “shorter” distances as traditional sports drinks (Cyto, Accelerate, G-Push (RIP), etc.) would be sufficient for electro replace. However, over a very long distance, these same fluids are not sufficient to replenish the electro loss and that is where Pedialyte comes in.

Pedialyte enables better fluid absorption at the levels of dehydration experienced during ultra races due to low osmolity and the presence of glucose. However, on a per litre basis it’s not as high in calories as other sports drinks (see below) making it less optimal for an IM or 1/2 IM

Per Litre

Sodium (mEq)…45
Potassium (mEq)…20
Chloride (mEq)…35
Dextrose (g)…25
Energy (Cal)…100

Thanks for the information. I can compare this with Endurolytes which I found were good during a Half IM when taken with water and the other concoctions I used while on the bike.

thanks!!!

My son would not drink the stuff when he was a real young’in. Like said before…taste like crap! Expensive too!

What a knucklehead

Hey Bryan:
Man, Chris is such an inspiration. 6 hours in when I saw him he looked toatlly cool calm and collected and even managed a broader grin when I gave him a thumbs up as I left the store with a freash tube of shaving cream (best stuff around).

The Pedialyte thing though, well, I’ll just say i really like Perpetuem and Hammer Gel and so that’s what I’ll keep using until I start doing 24 hour runs (not).

The weather, on Saturday at least, looks to be good in NYC, I can’t wait to ride without knee & arm warmers on…but for now I’m off to swim. Have a good weekend.

I’m just waking up from having headed Christopher’s (& Dean Karnazes’) crew - allow me to elaborate. First of all, it was the most amazing athletic feat I’ve ever seen. Chris finished at 153.76 miles and Dean was 148.96. Christopher had the previous record well within his grasp, but had a Julie Moss-worthy collaps just 0.15 miles from breaking it. With several minutes left, he was finally able to walk (stumble) for a few minutes before the time ran out. Dean, who paced himself more conservatively, finished strong - running at an 8:00 pace as time expired.

As for the nutrition, we used a variety of products including Hammer Gel, hammer Sustained Energy, Ensure, Pedialyte, Gatorade, Clif Bars, ice, chicken soup, Pringles, and a few other assorted goodies. Dean also had a pretty steady craving for Payday bars over the 2nd half.

When my baby was sick and dehydrated, the pediatrician told us to give him Gatorade, said it was a lot cheaper than Pedialyte and just as effective.

Whenever I run into Chris training, I have no idea how long he has been out. He always appears in control and with much in reserve.

Yes, good weather. Was in Philly picking up the new back and did the first 50 of the year in a short sleeved jersey. I’m pleased.

I always tell people about that guy who biked to mount everest (from somewhere in western europe), then climbed it, then got back on his bike and biked home

I believe that fellow was Goran Kropp (I may have the name mixed up). He rode from Sweden, scaled Everest without oxygen and then rode back to Sweden. Aparently he died a few years ago in a fairly benign" climbing accident.
