2018 Ironman 70.3 World championship - Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa

It looks if the town is all sold out, crazy but that’s the way it goes. If anyone here’s anything about accommodation please let us know. Travelling from Alberta, Canada. We’re on the cancellation list so far at one property. Cheers!

I’m guessing the tour people bought up the hotel space. You might want to check with Deepak Patel at Premium Plus Sports or Ken Glah. Ken gets great reviews and I’ve used Deepak and he is exceptional.

Them and Ironman. I got into the Boardwalk Hotel through African Travel Inc. (also booked a safari and the following weekend in Cape Town). Gonna be a good time.

My gf did a safari last year in Kruger National Park and said it was amazing. Plus the wine tours outside Capetown are great, and very inexpensive. Be sure to have some great Pinotage!

We’re going to Shamwari Game Reserve, closer to Port Elizabeth, and not in the malaria area like Kruger. They say Kruger is the best, but that would be another flight as well.

We have an entire day in Cape Town devoted to wine tours.

She found out when she got there that there had been a 2 year drought. No mosquitos anywhere! Lots of dry dust to wash from clothing, but little else. She loved to but a week was too long in her opinion. The food and prices were amazing as she got gourmet meals with wine for around $18! Enjoy…

Some links to other related articles as well. Curious to see how this turns out. In South-Africa one never nows…

I will look into that accommodation for sure, thanks!

You’re very welcome. Hope it works for you. Have a memorable trip…

I’m at the Protea Marine right on Marine Drive. I stayed there for IMSA earlier this year and really liked the hotel and location.

+1 on protea marine. Given that’s where Hoffman stays, I’d say it’s a winning choice.

Not definitive but some folks on the 2018 70.3 WC on FB are indicating a move down the road to Kings Beach.

Well if you go to the hotel map on the reservation page and zoom into Kings Beach there is a Bike symbol that you can click on and it says Transition 1.

Then if you go down to the parking lot across the street from the Road Lodge (next door to the Boardwalk), there is a Running Shoe symbol and it says Transition 2.

I couldn’t find anything that said IM Village or Finish, but I guess were all assuming that is with T2 Across from the Boardwalk Hotel. I would imagine they will run shuttles from T2 to the swim start since it is almost a mile.

Well, that doesn’t make any sense to me. If you can put the bikes at T2, then why have a separate T1? I could see moving the swim start to Kings Beach and making a pt to pt swim to the pier, then you could have T1/T2 at the same location same as IMSA. Regardless, I’m just there to collect the medal and make the fast guys look good.

Re Ironman expo, packet picket up, etc., that was all INSIDE the Boardwalk for Ironman South Africa. The finish line was across the street along side of T1/T2. There is not enough room across the street to have IM village outside.

Good Info.

Maybe they need the space since they’ll have twice as many bikes as the regular Ironman. In Chattanooga, even though the races were 2 separate days, the transition was able to fit all 4,000+ bikes at one time. This way, all the bikes are gone from Kings Beach by 10am, and the men can start checking bikes into the same space by noon or 1pm.

That makes a lot of sense, although I highly doubt the men’s race will be anywhere near 4,000. I’m going to guess more like 2000-2500 with maybe 1000 for the women’s race. This ain’t Chattanooga!

I think there is plenty of accommodation but all the tour places have bought up the rooms, no doubt jacking up the prices. What about Air BnB I’ve just scored a pretty good apartment pretty cheaply.

Prices no doubt will be higher, I was able to get into the Courtyard.

IMO the Courtyard is a really good location. Right next to the Boardwalk Hotel, so you can easily walk to IM Village, T2/Finish, and (presumably) shuttle buses to Swim Start/T1.

Does anyone know much about the potential course i.e is the water flat, clear, road surfaces, bike/run flat?

Any concern booking travel and hotel with the possible drought situation about to occur down there? I would hate to book the trip and then IM decides to move the race. Or worse yet it goes forward and the conditions and atmosphere aren’t the best.

Absolutely no concerns whatsoever; and not a chance in hell that IM would consider moving the race with so many people locked in. But if that’s going to nag at you, then don’t come. Meanwhile, here’s a very recent post someone put on the 70.3 WC facebook page although it’s about Cape Town, not PE>

“The US media is blowing this out of proportion. As a representative for African Travel Inc, the leading Safari and tour company to Africa, the situation in Cape Town, while very serious, is being watched very carefully. Cape Town is doing a lot to curb the shortage as Paul said above. Cape Town is hosting over 20k tourists for the upcoming Cape Bike Race, bringing all the water in for the event. I am headed to Cape Town on April 19th. I’ll have a personal first hand experience to report back. My advice, proceed as planned.”

I’ve got no concerns about going to PE in September, but I don’t think this situation is being blown out of proportion at all. They are running out of water. That’s not something that is being made up. Just look at the SA news. They are planning on turning off the taps in April if the dams are below 14% capacity. That sounds pretty fucking serious to me!

No one said it’s not serious, but suggesting they would move the race and other stuff is ridiculous. Meanwhile the turn off date - which applied to Cape Town - was extended to mid May and they have had rain. I will be conscious of my water usage while there, but I am not expecting water rationing on the course on race day.
