2015 Ironman 70.3 California Oceanside Check-In

We’re approximately 30 days away from the kickoff of the 2015 Ironman season here in the U.S., with Ironman California Oceanside 70.3 coming up on Saturday, March 28th. Thus, I figured I’d start the ST race check-in thread. Who else is going to be racing?

Also, in case you forgot, the back half of the bike course still hates you. I just hope that one aid station on the run is still passing out Otter Pops like they’ve done the past few years.

P.S. As mentioned in a prior thread and as seen on the maps, there will be a single transition area.

Check. I be there. I didn’t even look that closely at the course information yet and thus missed the single transition area. Wow!

It will be my first 70.3 and my brother’s as well. Been training since July and anxious to get it done.

I’ll try and stay out of your way…

I’m still on the fence. 50-50 I make it to the start line.

I’ll be there. Again.

Say, I’m still looking for a female roomie at a hotel a couple of miles from the start. Not convenient, but not terribly expensive, either. Message me if you’re looking for a place. Or I could cancel my hotel if anybody has a spare room or futon or whatever closer to the race.

I’m low key, good cook, good company.

In for O’side #9. It’s my local race. Always look forward to it!

I’m racing for the fourth year straight. Love the race and the city.

Looking forward to not crashing the day before or getting a flat during the race…

I’m in too, #7. Last year I got sick race week so I DNS. This year it’s just going to be a training day, at best.

I’m in for #4. Skipped last year but ready for this year.

I’ll be there, not racing but probably helping out at the Nytro tent handing out GoStik samples and telling bad jokes.

I’m in. First time at this race, and it’s my hometown (well, San Clemente, so close enough). It will be nice to sleep in my own bed prior to the race. It will be the inaugural race for my Dimond as well. I really hope they get the road work on Stuart Mesa all cleaned up by race day.

I’m in.Third race of this distance and first time here, although my husband did it a few times back when it was “Ralph’s” I think.Looking forward to it!

In as well. Here’s to pleasant water temps, a dry bike, and cool asphalt.

I’m in. First time at OS. Anyone want to give a quick and dirty description of the course? Looks somewhat hilly on the bike, but doesn’t look too bad overall.

The swim is in a somewhat controlled harbor, so it is not too choppy but there is movement. Can get pretty chilly (~60s) and you’ll see plenty of neoprene caps being sold by Nytro on Friday.

The bike is not bad. There are some hills, but nothing too crazy. The bike is relatively flat for the first 25 or so miles. You leave the harbor and go straight onto Camp Pendleton Marine Base. About 4 miles or so in, you’ve got a slight hill (nothing crazy) and then you have rollers and flats all the way up the coast to San Clemente. When you get near Trestles, there is a short hill that is a no pass zone. Make a right and head down Cristiantos for a few miles and we get away from the coast and back onto the base. I think this is around mile 27 or so. Then comes the first climb. It is a decent grade, but fear not. You will get up and over it and be moving again soon. The hill gives a nice break to the flat, IMO, but many complain about it. From there, you’ve got a nice descent and back to flat/rollers for a bit that go into a gradual hill. This is where you will reach the highest elevation, but it is pretty gradual and nothing to worry about. You’ve got another descent that has a speed limitation for safety/no pass zone, and then one final little climb and it is flat/rollers all the way home. The rollers heading back to transition (last 8 miles or so) usually feature a steady headwind, as you are heading back towards the coast.

The run a two looper that is a bit different from last year with the single transition. I understand it used to be this way, so others may have better insights. For the most part, not much has changed overall, just that you run from transition towards the pier and then its basically up and down the coastal streets of Oceanside. There are a few little hills (ramp up to the pier, running off the coast and up onto the main street) but nothing crazy. The asphalt last year (when I was running) was super hot as I recall, or maybe that was my excuse. I don’t think there is much to the run though. Lots of asphalt, lots of locals supporting, plenty of aid, and 13.1 miles of fun. Hope that helps.

Perfect! Just what I was looking for! Thanks.

Fifth time for me, first since '11. Love heading down to sea level to race there.

I’ll be there 2nd time in a row. Looking forward to it.

I think that is a great idea.
