Just trying to decide whether to go with the standard P3 setup with the Magura RT6 brakes (without shifters on brake area) or switch to Ultegra brakes and having shifter option on brake area as well as aerobars…?
Also do you like the matte finish? is it easy to clean?
Mat finish is durable but not as easy to clean or keep clean. Upside is that it won’t show any scratches as easily as the clear coat does.
No thoughts on your shifters but I do really like the Magura’s on mine.
Totri…you have the P3 2014 with Di2? How do you like it? any other thoughts about it? thanks
One of the selling points of the Magura’s is the stopping power? Can’t most brakes close hard enough to lock up the wheel? I say go with standard brakes so that you can have the shifters on your brake levers. That’s one of the big selling points of Di2 and you’d be missing out if you went with the unnecessary hydraulic braking. Not to mention that anyone can work on standard brakes (including last minute emergency repair before a race).
Thanks Michael. That is a good point. I do want the shifters by the brakes and I’m not sure if you can do that with the Magura’s. I will look into it. I realize most TT bikes just have the shifters on aero bars but the Di2 would have at both locations. So I will see if I can get the bike with Ultegra brakes.
I’m 200lbs and the 6800 Ultegra brakes are plenty to bring me to a halt on the numerous hills around my area which includes the Mt. Palomar segment of the Tour of California.
One thing to keep in mind with standard cable brakes is the new polymer cables from Shimano. They could be beneficial if you are setting up a bike like that where you have a lot of sharp cable bends, because they have far less friction in the housing than standard (or even PTFE) cables. Shimano sells an aftermarket cable kit for dura ace, but soon they will an Ultegra level version of them will be available. The Ultegra version is less expensive, but not as tightly wound. Might be a worthy upgrade if you aren’t going with hydraulic (where one of the advantages is that it works well regardless of sharp cable routing bends). The kits come with housing and the only thing different with installation is your torque the bolts to 6Nm to protect against slippage.
