Ironman is reporting that IMFL 2013 sold out in less than a minute. How is this possible? Doesn’t the whole process of signing up through Active.com take more than a minute?
this year if you got to a certain screen you had a slot held for you, so all the slots were ‘spoken for’ but probably not paid for. Though I’ve gotten really good at registering and can probably do it under a minute.
This same system was what Vineman 70.3 had as well, guess it’s a new feature of active.com
Could you essentially reserve a slot before the actual registration time?
I don’t know if you could. Probably not though, before registration opened if you clicked on the register now button it took you to a screen that said registration is not open yet. So depending on when exactly it opened maybe?
I signed up on site after the volunteers, there was “talk” on site that they might not even have slots go to the internet. The line for volunteers had to be over a quarter mile long.

Good point, I didn’t take that into consideration.
I would love to hear from the director on exactly how many slots, if any, were available online. I would also like to see the break down of how many of this years athletes, volunteers, and general public entered on site.
I know this is probably a pipe dream getting this info.
I didn’t sign up for next year, but I plan to go volunteer for it. I raced it last year and this and really appreciated how great the volunteers were…I just think it’d be cool and a lot of fun to help out and encourage people to give what they got.

I noticed that some racers actually volunteer later in the day. I am going to try and figure out how to do this next year, maybe go work the finish line later in the evening.
My friend and I were both able to sign up, so I know there were at least two spots (plus another poster above, so three!). We probably had our spot reserved within the first 30 seconds of it going onsale. I could definitely believe that all the available spots were taken after only a minute.
I was online 10’ early, all logged into active and hitting refresh…closest I got was a screen saying “You have 15 mins to complete this form.” at top, but below that saying "This event is sold out. " Definitely confusing…
Someone told me later that Ironman was tweeting to “refresh” that page as it meant my spot was actually being held…but alas I wasn’t on twitter. All of this was btw 12:00 and 12:03.

P,
I was all registered by 12:03. Do I need to create an OS Plan to help you with your online registration skills? Mix in some FTP/VO2 keyboard and mouse work with some F5/Refresh 30/30 intervals.

Another thing to consider is the deal that WTC gave to this years IM Canada athletes. They were given the option to sign up early for a few races (IM Florida for sure and I think IM Arizona, possibly others). I signed up online as soon as general entry opened, but I know 2 people who raced Canada this year that have been registered for Florida for about a week now.
I had 2-3 friends that got signed up on-line. I stood in the volunteer line for over 2 hours to get my spot!
I was able to sign up online.
I got in too.
I got up that morning at 5:00. Was in line by 5:30. While I was doing it, I was thinking, “Is this really necessary?” Now I’m sure it was.
Volunteer at checkin/registration the first day if u are there. I did that at a race so I could register after the race in case I KQd
I had that problem with vineman. Oh well, saved some cash!
