2012 San Diego ITU WCS

USAT just announced that San Diego will hold a WCS event on May 12-13. The event will be the second qualifier event for the US Olympic team. Now for my bias… SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IS A GREAT CHOICE!

from the article:

In conjunction with the WCS event, top-flight Olympic- and sprint-distance age-group races will be contested with a total of up to 3,000 amateurs competing in the same venue as the world’s best athletes. Age-group athletes will be able to register for the races later this month.

I’m so there.

I’m super excited. I’ll travel down from Seattle for this.

Rumor is it will be in mission bay. Flat. Flat. Flat.

Exciting! Marked my calendar. O’side in March and then this (AGer div. obviously)–next year’s race schedule is already taking shape for me!

yeah 6 laps around fiesta island would be 40k, that would make sense…very flat, but the wind on the backside could create breaks and make it interesting.

Hum…

Wildflower triathlon is scheduled for May 4-6, the weekend before ITU. Tough choice, maybe do both?

They would probably never get the permits, but a trip up and down Soledad would be an awesome twist.

Curious if anybody has heard anything about the course?

Looking into where I want to stay for this, never been to Mission Bay. I would like to be near the expo and the course (if possible).

Also curious if anybody has any idea when registration opens up for the amatuer race?

Dumb question alert…but the AG race will be non drafting, right? Registration opens on Sunday.

Do you have the website or registration info?

From the article:
Indeed, athletes will come from around the world, and American athletes will get to witness a type of racing rarely seen in the States: the draft-legal style contested in the Olympics.

An international group of 3,000 amateur triathletes will get to test themselves against each other and the non-drafting Olympic course.

It sounds like non-draft.

I believe the AG race is non-draft.

nice. don’t have far to go. as stated the course is super fast but the wind on the backside can be brutal. i usually pull away on the backside but find i don’t push fast enough where there is no wind, i need to work on that. should be a fun venue.

I am interested in signing up because this is new and exciting.

However, it does get frustrating when the only information available is a link to take your $190.

No course info. Doing laps of Fiesta Island with 3000 of my AG friends would just be way to frustrating. And for those asking, if this is the case, it will be a draft fest of epic proportions.

I am going to take a risk of missing out until course info is available.

I did send an email to the dude on the registration page. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

I saw a proposed course map last week. Similar to the other metropolitan ITU olympic courses, it will multiple looped bike and run routes.

There will be a large grandstand erected across the street from Belmont park and the bike and run will pass by there multiple times to make the race more spectator friendly. The swim will be in Bonita Cove. The bike will be around Mission bay but not multiple loops around Fiesta Island. Most likely a 8 mile course that will pass the grandstand three times. The run will be on the Boardwalk. Probably two out and backs of three miles.

More draft opportunities=much better

WHOA! $195 for registration for the Olypmic race. Not sure I’m willing to shell out that much for a course that potentially be more packed than any given weekend on the San Luis Rey river Trail.
