NYC triathlon is a lottery with no qualifying times again this year, so people who actually train for these things may be on the couch while newbies are floating down the river on noodles.
Am I the only one who thinks this totally sucks? Do they do this just to avoid the hassle of checking qualifying times?

Seems like you are the only one who thinks this way. Why in the world would you want the NYC Triathlon to require qualifying times? Go out in a bar on Halloween night with your friends, get on your iphone at 11:59 pm, register and get another beer after you register. If you don’t get in, then get three beers. Really not that complicated.
Firstly - who cares? Try for the lottery. If you don’t get in… then you don’t? Why do you care about this race so much?
Because I live a mile from the start? I find it fun to do local races, particularly huge big like this.
Secondly - how would you qualify someone for this race?
How would you qualify someone for the NYC marathon?
You live a mile away… but so do 3 million other people. Lottery is easier to administer.
As for the marathon comparison… there are 26.2’s run every weekend everywhere. Sure some courses are tougher, but they don’t bend the rules. It’s (for example) 2:50 to get in. Not all Oly’s are created equal so simply a time based qual is unlikely. Maybe like USAT % of AG. I dunno. From the RD’s perspective, if they can fill the field with lottery… seems a lot easier logistically.

Of course. I’m not complaining that everyone doesn’t get in. There needs to be something.
But there’s a reason the marathon has qualifying times in addition to the lottery. It’s because in addition to being for charities and a fun event for the community, it is also a serious race and a winner is declared. It seems like a very reasonable compromise to let in people who qualify, and fill the rest with a lottery.
You’d seriously rather have people floating down the river on noodles while slowtwitchers who train year round don’t get in?

Which is what I said in the first post: they didn’t feel like dealing with it.
Side note: they (and many other tri’s) already have time-based qualification to enter as an age-group elite. So although not perfect, it’s already being done.
I think it is 2:10 to get into the Elite wave…I am not sure if the lottery also applies here in addition to having the time but if not then that is a kinda qualifying time. NYC is a cool race (will be my 4th next year) and despite the uber fast swim it is actually a slowish course compared to somewhere like DC due to the run and bike being pretty rolling and nasty humidity.
BTW, you can also just volunteer on the friday/sat and get automatic entry for next year or even better get a loved one (or really good friend (maybe a small bribe needed)) to volunteer who doesn’t care about actually doing the race and use their code (since it is transferable)…my method.
I won my age group last year, M24, and received an email a few months ago with a code that allowed me to register without the lottery process, so I guess that this counts as qualifying. All signed up and ready to go for next July. Good luck with the lottery
Evidently it was only for the first place finishers. I have a friend in the F30-34 who also finished second and nothing. Bizarre policy. I would think that the top three in every age group should automatically qualify.
