Well, 2012 is only days away. What’s everyone working toward?
Last year, I had nothing to add, product of knowing how huge a side project I’d taken on was turning out to be. This year, however, is shaping up much better.
So, I’ll start:
Race lots
Improve my swim
Run a sub-5 mile
Run 1:20 in a 1/2 IM
Go huge at Embrunman
Stay healthy and fit for Challenge Wanaka '13
After last year’s debacle, I hope 2012 will be better.
A+ goal: Get healthy. Four months after my crash, I still have issues with neuropathic pain, and potential traumatic brain injury related issues (the docs are not in agreement on that one). On the plus side I’m returning to work in the new year, and have started running again, and my 7km training loop is only a couple of minutes slower than last summer.
A goal: IM Mont Tremblant. Before last Labour day weekend I would have said I was shooting at sub-12 or maybe better, but I have to be realistic and right now I’m taking a sub-14. Goal time will be refined as the year progresses
A- goal: Half-marathon PR in the Toronto Goodlife Marathon in May. My current PR is something like 1:38, and is soft, because it’s from before I started to run “seriously”. I’d like to think I was in sub-1:30 shape last summer, so that’s what I’m shooting for.
My main goal for 2012 will be to get back solid health
A: Goal - 730 hours of training (average 2 hours per day), finish Gat Loppet 50K XC ski race
B: Run 2600K (50K per week),
C: Start and finish a 10K, half marathon and half Ironman
Right now, I can’t really count on when my left leg will work or not and often have to stop through bike rides and runs for stretching and to help regain control. Biking is the worst. The good news is that I can swim and XC ski like normal. So just being able to enter and finish a few run races will be good, and if I can do a half IM that will be a bonus (although I am worried about the biking and I’m not sure I can get out of the water and do a proper transition either). For now I think I need to focus on spending 2012 to try to get better for 2013 and enjoy what I enjoy which is just training a couple of hours per day daily.

Let’s see what ya got, people!
Can I add one more goal for you to go with Embrunman
From what I see from being a bystander and what seems like you having strong determination and will , I think you can do it no problem. Seems you enjoy the work to do it, by not seeing it as a problem but as something to conquer ;0)
My goal is just to stay healthy to compete at a level I am capable of and not drown doing so.
hmmm…after 2010, I don’t know if I can predict much. That year I had Kona, the ITU WCs and many other big goals that got destroyed by fracturing my femur. 2011’s only goal was to be able to run at some point and race if possible (ended up with a great late summer/fall and running came back into my life by May).
2012 has the following on my goals: Kona, Vegas, Maui and a PB in the half mary, 10k and 5k distances. I am also tinkering with doing the NYC marathon. The next month or two will determine if I am on track to go for those goals.
Another fatty here… In reviewing last year’s goals (http://forum.slowtwitch.com/cgi-bin/gforum.cgi?post=3151396) - I didn’t do so good. Well, I did get goals #1 and 5, but didn’t race enough 5ks or 1/2 marathons to get close enough to my goals. I think I have it in me. So I will keep them on the list.
2012:
4 XTERRA races (Vashon, Black Diamond, Portland and Whistler) - survive and enjoy.
Crack 1:45 for 1/2marathon.
Crack 45min for 10k (SunRun - April).
Run a 7 min mile. I honestly have no idea if this will be easy or hard to achieve. All I know is this is faster than my current 5k pace, and I don’t really know how to suffer yet - this goal is designed to teach me how to push stupid hard.
No other clues here. I am way too ADD to focus and achieve goals I think.
I’ve done some adventure tris with paddling instead of swimming and some duathlons, but otherwise I’m a mountain biker and mud racer. Never done any competitive swimming ever. Tried with a coach in 2011, but did not get to where I could even start to “train” the swim as I couldn’t reliably breath without taking on water. I don’t think I gave it a fair shake, though, and I had every intention of trying again this winter, but…
The Leadville 100 MTB race got to me. Couldn’t stand it. And when I found a way in, I couldn’t resist. So I’ve put off working on swimming and will continue to run and bike. But the focus will be to train for Leadville and a 10 hour finish. I figure that gives me a couple hours of wiggle room for a bad day to still get me a small buckle, and if I somehow have a great day I could potentially see 9 hours and a big buckle. But honestly, as long as I’m under 12 I’ll be tickled pink, and don’t really expect even that. We’ll see. I have a history of problems with altitude, but will start sleeping in an altitude tent soon (we live at 500 feet) and training more in Western NC at 3-6k feet. Definitely planning lots of acclimation time, too.
Oh, and uh, well, so far my longest bike ride ever was a week ago at 48 miles. So I’m signed up for a century road ride in the spring, will do some 6 hour MTB races, and am signed up for the 63 mile Off Road Assault on Mount Mitchell, which is three weeks before Leadville. Perfect timing for heading to Colorado the next day and three weeks of acclimating and tapering while getting some time on the course. With luck I can get out there in late spring/early summer as well, but we’ll see.
Biting off more than I can chew? We’ll see. Hopefully that works out and then I can keep my run and bike base over next winter while I get the swimming down and start doing some XTERRA’s in 2013.
One simple goal - beat this fookin’ ITBS and be able to run again. I don’t care if it is 10’ / mile. I just wanna be able to run…everything else will be gravy.
Swim Sub-20min 1500m (wetsuit) - No time limit
Win AG in Stockholm Triathlon 2012 - August 2012
Run 36:xx 10km - August 2012
Run 2:48:47 (4:00/km) in Dublin City Marathon - October 2012
Don’t get injured
.
FINISH the Christmas to Easter trail marathon (8th Jan - no training - From Cold Christmas to Good Easter in the UK… otherwise it would be great for the 100/100!) Not really trained properly for this so will be just for fun
Sub 1:35 1/2 Mary in Feb
Sub 3:20 @ London Marathon
Raid Pyrenees dressed in pink in June
Get a sub 2:10 Oly (PR 2:16)
Sub 1:00 Sprint (PR 1:05)
Maybe get a podium or AG win at a local race… not too much to ask? made 5th & 8th last year… could all the fast boys get ill?
Rock out a few sundays with the ‘proper’ cycling group at my sunday ride
Set new PRs at 5k (17:43), half marathon (1:19:40), and marathon (2:50:49). Could be tough as I have a second little one showing up any day now. A few weeks ago I signed up to be coached by Brad Hudson (www.hudsontrainingsystems.com), so hopefully that helps.

i had the same problem!!! but i ran with vibrams and had no msjor trouble since. now i e done half and full marathon and half ironman. currently training with newtons though but still no ITBS. or try running real slow and tip toe or midfoot strike.
Main Goal: Race Kona significantly faster than 2010–I hesitate to name a specific time goal because of the variable conditions from year to year–but I’ll know it if I do it (or not).
Secondary Goal: KQ at IMAZ 5 weeks later.
From a training perspective–pretty much the same as this year:
-1000 hours
-350-400k yards swimming
-10,000 miles on the bike
-1500+ miles on the run
–AND–stay healthy and motivated throughout…
Empty nester beginning in September–will be interesting with a bit more time on my hands…
