I would go with the 2014 with trek care plus, AMAZING warrenty that replaces components on the bike when they wear out, AND if bike is wrecked replaces the bike. I have seen trek follow through with both aspects of this first hand! plus so much lighter and easier to work on, components have also changed a lot in 4 years, * would say 2014 ultregra will be better thn 2010 used dura ace. message me if you have more questions. *
I had similar choice, and got an SC7 3 months old second hand in as new conition, it had been upgraded to full Dura-Ace, with adamo, DSW bento, draft box, and a profile front end… all for 2100bucks AUD…
Sold the wheels for 500, sold the adamo for 120… so 1500 for the fuselage…
I have replaced front end with 3T Brezza, added tri rig omega, got a COB JOF and thrown on my Bonty aeouls 5/7 wheels…
I am loosing very little to a current SC and it was easily half price…
Given the % of time i spend training and race on it compared to the many road rigs i have, there is no justofication IMO for spending more…
I don’t ever look at it and wish i’ got the new yet, so it must have been the right choice for me…
Afaik if you slap on a tririg brake and decent aero bars, the difference will come down to the speed fin, toptube/seattube intersection and fork. The first two count for a watt at best, the fork maybe two iirc. Not enough for me to upgrade and tbh I’d be looking to the p5 first anyway.
Thanks everyone, @Shadwell, Sounds like you got a great deal, the 2nd hand 2010 SC that I contemplated is nowhere near new and has seen many k’s, so i dont think I will go 2nd hand.
My coach tells me I need a power meter to help with my training, as I only ride with power on my trainer, I was trying to save some $$$ as power meters are not cheap.
@Zammo, from what read the new SC is nearly as aero as the P5, and I am looking at the 7.5 SC, which I can get for about 4K, vs a P5-3 red which is at least 6K.
P5 is out of my price range and if what i read is true about the SC being nearly as aero, it would be a good buy.
yeah, the new 7.5 is a pretty good deal especially when you compare it to Trek’s 9.5. It is eventually last years 9.5 and this years 9.5 with a different carbon lay-up. You could put a stages PM on it and still be all in for under $5k, which is a pretty good deal for a new bike of that caliper. Nothing wrong with a used bike though if you can find one in great condition from someone you trust. I just picked up a new Plasma Premium from someone local with no worries. Good luck on your new bike search!
i have both bikes. i think if you’re talking 7 series the differences are more minor, 9 series the differences more pronounced. i think the biggest difference is in 10sp v 11sp. you should consider what you want going forward - which number of cogs on your wheels. you’ll want a platform that you can be happy with in 3 years, whatever it is you buy.
just to clarify, a new 7.5 is basically a slightly heavier new 9 series…same new cockpit, external steerer fork design and everything. all the new 7’s have that fork setup too…just the 7.0 uses a steerstub to accommodate a conventional stem-bar cockpit, where the old 7 had a conventional fork (and wider headtube) to accomplish the same thing.
