2009 Campy shifters

Anyone using any of the new 2009 Campy shifters? Curious about the new hoods, silicone, design as they look awesome. Appear slightly larger than previous, but not as big as Shimano or SRAM.

What sucks is that the top 3 (Super Record, Record and Chorus) are all 11 speed and now need new everything else. They only differ in materials. Now, Centaur is the old Record/Chorus with carbon levers, big jumps, etc. and still compatible with the older 10 speed stuff - that is what I’m looking at as my current right Record has now lost its indexing (yes, I know a $5 spring and rebuild) so time for an upgrade. I’ll put my old Record (after I attempt the rebuild) on the cross bike as I just killed the left Shimano 105 on it and there is no rebuilding that.

I am running the 2009 Centaur. I just tried a bike with 2009 Dura Ace.

I still prefer 9 speed Campy shifting to anything. The 2009 DA is very good…a big improvement to the so-smooth-you-cant-tell 7800 (personal preference). The ergonomics of 2009 Campy is the best. It is a toss up between the new DA and 2009 Centaur. The DA shifters were kind of squared off feeling after running the Campy hoods for a while.

I don’t like the new levers, but I have fairly small hands and the old style fits really nicely.

I also think the new ones look kind of dumb - like the Shimano ones with the big horn on the front like a cowboy saddle or something…

LOL! Ride 'em cowboy!

My hand fits best on the Shimano levers, but not SRAM and is just a touch big for the older Campy levers - so, I figured it should be just right. Actually, the new 7900 DA levers are probably perfect, but at the rate I go through parts, I’m not about to drop $600 on those. I’ll attempt rebuilding my Record one since I’ve always wanted to anyway

Thanks for your insight!

If you’ve never done it before it’s a $5 spring, $20 in beer and a few hours of your time.

Unless you get lucky, in which case it’s like 35min to do.

LOL! Pretty much what I have read. I’m hoping my finely honed surgeon hands will help - of course, the beer will negate all that, especially if I imbibe $20 worth!

Rebuild is a piece of cake. I did it in a couple hours last summer. Trickiest thing was driving out the pin to start. Just watch the disassembly video (and then assembly video) on youtube and hit pause and rewind a bunch.

Just buy good beer…

I used to ride campy but switched to SRAM last season. I feel the SRAM hood fit my hand a lot better, and the adjustable reach is nice too.

Hey Rod, how’d it go?

Rebuilding Campy shifters is a breeze, but I am am mechanic and I have been rebuilding them for many years. Take your time, spread out an area and notice the orientation of parts as you remove them. Lay them out neatly and clean and lube everything as you go back.

Well, stage 1 went fine: the new 2009 ergo levers on the Soloist (hate cabling that internal routed infernal thing - jtek shiftmate on the rear for the Dura Ace rear der and ZeroG brakes further complicate things). Went with bling white cables, the new white Fizik Dual tape with red stitching. Love the new hoods, but the shifts (Centaur) seem “long” on the finger throw compared to the older Record, especially the front. Thumb downshifts (all 5) are very sharp/crisp.

Have the cross bike torn down and done with the old Record shifters, but still awaitng the little spring … and more beer. Cabling took 2 brews. I do have some fine hemostats and pickups to use for the rebuild

Thanks for asking!
