Will the 2008 AG nationals return to Portland, OR? And idea when they announce where the 2009 race is? Any rumors?

08 will be in Portland (Forest Grove/Hagg Lake). They didn’t announce 07/08 until last August, so I would expect the 09/10 announcement to be made next summer.

Didn’t I hear that there are no AG Nationals next year b/c of the Olympics? Or was there no Team USA? Or no Worlds?

Clearly, I’m “in the loop”.

Lets see. Because of the olympics, the worlds next year, is before nationals.

Because of the Worlds being in early June 08, the Team USA for 08 had a different process to select than normal.

So, since there will be two nationals before the 09 worlds, it is not clear what the total process will be for the 16 per AG.
So far what has been posted on the USAT web is a minimum of six from 08 nationals qualify for 09 worlds.

Since my last post was soooooo helpful, I pulled the following info off the USAT website:

There are no AG Nationals next year. Rather, Team USA is decided as follows:

16 people in each AG make Team USA:

The first 8 are the top 8 in each AG at 2007 Nationals. These people automatically qualify for 2008 Team USA.

Then, there are going to be some “Intermediate Distance Regional Championship” races, and the winner in each AG makes Team USA. This can roll down to 3rd place.

Worlds are in Vancouver.

The next AG Nationals is in 2009, and I think it’s still in Portland.

  1. The 2008 Age Group National Championship will have a minimum of six World Championship slots for 2009 World Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. Date to be determined.

There are Nationals next year, it’s just those people will be racing in July for spots at Worlds in 2009 since Worlds '08 is in June. Presumably, Team USA for '09 will consist of athletes who qualify at Nationals in '08 and/or '09.

I think they did something like this in '04/'05 because of '04 worlds being held early in the year due to the Olympics.

All I remember was that in '04 in Shreveport, the top 6 from each AG qualified.

I don’t remember if in KC in '05 they were going to take the top 10 in each AG to fill out the team for Hawaii…we all know what happened there.

So the assumption would be, given the same process, that they take 6-10 athletes from '08 nationals and the remaining from '09 nationals to fill out the world team for '09.
