2006 P3C vs. 2009 P2

If you had to choose between a 2006 P3C and a 2009 P2, which would you buy? Both are DA builds, and the prices are about the same, but which is the superior bike?

I’m ready to jump on the Cervelo bandwagon, and I think I’ve narrowed it down to either of these two bikes. I’m torn on the matter, though, so your input is appreciated.

Thanks,

If it fits, the p3
.

that’s easy…P3C. Although I am not sure if the P3C with the Wolf TT fork is faster than the P2C with the 3T fork.

Performance wise, there is almost 0 difference between these bikes. There is a chart you can search on ST that shows only a 15 gram drag difference between the frames, it’s so small in comparison to the drag created by your position that it is relatively unimportant. Whichever one fits you better is the way to go.

I have a 2008 P2C and am building up a 2006 P3C frame–you are talking miniscule differences. The drag of the P3C is a tiny bit less, the P3C weighs a tiny bit less (although I have been told that the stock fork on the 2006 was heavy–you might want to research that), the geometry is a tiny bit different.

The only caveat to “whichever fits you better” is do you already have a rear race wheel? Make sure it fits on the P3C (as far as I know there are no issues fitting any rear wheels on the P2C, Hed Jet disc fits no problem).

Two non-performance issues. First, 2006 P3C looks a lot better than the 2009 P2C IMO if that matters to you. Don’t want to be riding an ugly bike! Second, 2009 P2C is going to hold value better. When I was looking for a frame to build I was surprised how strong demand is for P2C frames–they just get snapped up.

What Size are you? I have just brought a P4 and have a 11month old 58 P3C frame with the 3T fork. Also it is the best color in my opinion, the Mclaren racing colors!

Thanks for the detailed reply, Phil. I was unaware of the ST drag charts, which will undoubtedly prove to be geek heaven for me.

I do not yet have a rear disc, and the P3C stock fork has already been replaced with an Easton EC90 Aero, so those are non-issues. Also, I certainly agree about the appearance factor; the paint scheme on the 2009 P2 is terrible!

As for depreciation, given that the P2 is new, I imagine that I would take a bigger hit than I would on the already depreciated (used) P3C. Thoughts?

Lastly, should I be concerned about service/warranty issues on second-hand bikes? With these dollar amounts, paranoia always sets in…

Thanks again,

If the P2 is new then I would go with it since you will get a lifetime warranty on the frame which you won’t get on the used one. Also having new components would also be a big selling point for me as I wouldn’t need to replace anything for a while.

Again they need to fit but I think based on the marginal performance differences between the 2 bikes and the 3T fork on the 09 which would bring them closer would swing me that way.

Depending on the problem, it may only be coverd under crash replacement - so you may still be out 2 grand on a bike that is under warranty.

Depends on fit. Also, the 51cm sizes are nearly identical. Colour is just a personal preference. Warranty on the 2009.
