It’s a nice bike. I had the same bike, 56 and I am 6 feet tall. It will fit you fine. I did IM-WI with it in 2007 and it performed great. Thought I would trade her in for an upgrade last year for IM-WI this year…well my new cervelo broke down and I DNF’ed (it was may fault completely, not the cervelo). What made matters more interesting, I was pasted by an equinox 7 around mile 75!
The bike frame is very areo. It will likely come with 105 if it wasn’t upgraded. I would recommned this bike to anyone starting out. You won’t be disapointed.
If you don’t mind…what saddle height do you have from center of bb to top center of saddle? I’m a bit nervous b/c the guy lobbed off the top of the steerer tube and there is hardly anything left…it’s not worth buying if I need a new fork.
I have this exact bike. I am just shy of 6’1. The 56 is a perfect fit for me…very comfortable. I was shocked that I was on a 56 as I really thought I would be a 58. I have ridden the bike in 3 HIMs and 1 IM.
I just looked thru the documentation I got with the bike when I bought it and see there is no geometry pictures. I can measure anything you want on mine if you have questions.
The distance from the center of my bottom bracket to the top center of my seat is 30 inches.
I’m 5’-10", long torso (31" inseam) and pretty flexible and I have never been able to get the front end comfortable (low enough) for me.
At 6’, I think a medium should fit you fine. Let me know what dimensions you want and I’ll pull a tape.
I can also scan the geometry chart I have from it if need be.
That would be awesome if you could pull your saddle height for me.
The way these were sized back in '06 wasn’t S, M and L though…they still did traditional. 54,56 58,60…so dunno how much that helps.
Anything you can shed on this would be great. I know I like the shorter top tube idea b/c I’m built like a giraffe with long legs, but I just dunno about the bar drop b/c he has very little steerer tube available.
I have a 2006 E7 in a 58. I am 5’11 1/2 feet tall and the saddle is as far forward as can be on the rails, unfortunately the 58 is a bit too big for me.
So a 56 should fit you fine.
I Would be willing to trade my 58 for a 56 if anyone is interested.
I had an 56 '05 Eq9 and I am 6ft. Your height alone is really not enough to speak of the fit. You can pull the stack and reach from the S&R page here on ST.
The Equinox falls into the “short & narrow” frame geometry vs. the “long & low” designs of Felt and Cervelo. The Equinox is slack, but if you turn around the seatpost and run the seat fwd on the rails you can get to 79* or steeper. I had the nose of the saddle 2.5cm in front of the BB.
The Equinox fit me well b/c I have long legs and a short torso. If you have a normal to long torso and ride steep, you may have challenges getting low enough as someone else already mentioned.
If you already have a tri bike AND you have a good fit, then you can at least compare the S&R from your current frame to the Equinox. That may give you a ballpark idea whether the frame will work or not.
As far as likes/dislikes…sure its not the lightest frame and it doesn’t ride as well as my '08 C’dale Slice…but that’s comparing alum to carbon and a 3yr newer bike. No surprise there. The only negative I found was the headset bearings / design. I am surmising a bit here, but I since I rode steeper that the bikes intended design, I think it wore the bearing out faster and I’d get some cupping going on. I replaced them once and < 1yr later it started up again.
Overall I found it to be a very good entry level bike. I ended up upgrading the cockpit, brake calipers and crank. In general it was easy to maintain. I had the Bontrager Race Aero Lite wheels which I found were great. I actually miss that wheelset.
Thanks Tim this is great stuff. I think I’m pretty set on the 56 and realize there is give and take no matter who you are on sizing. Stack height is key for me, but not at the risk of going too large a frame and having to run a 70mm stem. I have always felt more comfortable working my way ‘out’ with a longer stem than backwards b/c of too long a top tube. The 58 would give me a bit more stack, but the reach doesn’t work for me ideally.
man you guys are all scaring me. i currently ride a 54 5200 road bike and am thinking of getting an equinox. i had one of the old hilo bikes in a 54 and thought it fit great. i was think of a 54 equinox but looking at you guys talking about someone 6’ being in 56 scares me. i’m short, only 5’7’ with an inseem of 29 on a good day. i’m now wondering if a 52 is the way to go. anyone have any thoughts??
I would try posting a new thread or emailing Trek to get the stack and reach for a 54 Hilo. Then you can at least compare it to the S&R page here on ST.
Anyone have any opinions on the Equinox compared to the Cervelo P1? I’m trying to decide between the two. I have not heard anything negative on either bike
What do all you Equinoxer’s think an upper and lower limit would be for one of these…2006 E7 all stock: no pedals and a set of Bontrager Race’s, pretty darn good condition…$800? $1000? I have no idea. I mean the brand new Equinox is going for $1,700 and that was before the stores went nuts on all the '09 closeouts to make room for the 2010’s.
I got a really good deal on mine…bought it in the first part of 07…so it was a ‘last years’ model. I paid $1312. I think the price would obviously depend on the condition, wear and tear, and maintenance. If you could get it for $800, I think that would be a great deal…but would expect you would have to pay a bit more.
