I seem to recall reading a post here a while back that referred to some problems with Zipp 404 wheelsets circa 2002. I haven’t been able to turn anything up searching threads. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone provide details?
Thanks,
Bob C.
I know Zipp had problems with the hubs on their 2001 models. However 84/202 hubsets were brought in in 2002 which are great.
psycholist,
I had a pair of those same ZIPP’s and after about
6 months I had wobble that at about 40mph+ was
scary. Drove to Indy and dropped the rim off to ZIPP
and waited for about 5 months before I got a replacement.
Just after that one got back, the rear
did the same thing. Dropped that one off as well
and about 1 month later they replaced it.
ZIPP was great. Long delay which was frustrating to
me but I waited it out and got 2 brand new rims. No
problems since then.
I was told they were waaaay out of true and some
other manufacturing issue caused the problem.
I did notice that on both rims before I sent them
back they had a vertical indention at several places
on the rim. I was told that was not normal and
they backed it up.
No problems since, just having fun racing as fast as
possible.
where are you riding 40+mph in the fort! have a great holliday!
I thought that was you BS. I was riding down at the
3 State S Mountain century that year and it was
pretty scary with the front end wobbling very bad.
Thought for sure I was going to wreck or hit the
guard rail.
Problems over noe and no…still can not ride at
40mph in the Fort. All is OK, need to come out of
retirement and start working out more. IM MOO is
lurking every so closer. Need to be ready.
Thanks for the reply.
I was looking at a set on ebay, but somebody paid way too much and outbid me. So it goes. Saved me from myself, actually. I needed another set of wheels like I need a hole in the head … which is what my wife would have given me had I won that auction.
