20 Minute FTP Test and Asthma

Would it be skewing the results if I did 10 minutes of warm up prior to the warm-up in the TrainerRoad 20 minute FTP test? My asthma is mostly ok, but still an issue, and I often need a longer warm-up, as I understand many asthmatics do. In fact, I sometimes find that I need to push a hard effort early in a ride to experience some spasms, and that seems to open the lungs for the rest of the ride. I guess the 1 and 5 minute pre-amble will do the trick.

A good warmup is essential to an accurate FTP. I find that adding maybe 10 minutes in tempo zone followed by 10 minutes of easy pedaling helps get me ready for the test without killing the legs

As it applies practically, I’d assume that you would do a similar warmup before an hour TT to ensure the best results, right?

If that’s the case I’d say that the extra warmup wouldn’t just be ok it would be necessary for accurate results.

For the 20 min FTP test on TrainerRoad, you have a 30 min w/u before the actual test. Do you need longer than that to warm up? I don’t think it’d be that much of an issue, as long as you don’t poop yourself out before the test…

Thanks, I probably do because I suffer most when I go anaerobic early in a workout, breathing gets very laboured and therefore less oxygen to muscles as well.

So, did not go as planned. I think I made a mistake in trying to aim for a 15 watt improvement over my last test with only slow base behind me. Had to bail after 5 of the 20 minutes. Once the breathing got out of control, that was it. Frustrating, but I’ll just move on to TR mid volume base 2 which has some stronger efforts and then test again in a few weeks.

How are you treating your asthma currently?
You might want to see if you can control it better if a 20 minute test fires it off. Give your doc a call! When mine was not under control it was really frustrating to work out. It was magic once I fixed it.

Thanks,

I take Symbicort twice daily, 2 puffs, and Oxeze two puffs before workouts, but I still get spasms with an intense effort, like a long hill early in a workout, or very fast spinning, or hard interval runs.

Do you still get spasms?

I would not so much worry about a prolonged warm up rather the uses of albuterol immediately before a test. Being a stimulant it will elevate your HR. Your frequency of use will dictate the number rise- for me, a life long asthmatic with controllable symptoms, it raises about 4 bpm until leveling off.

I don’t have asthma, just going to throw that out there because it may mean the following is dumb and I just don’t understand what it is like to have asthma.

Beyond the treatment there is also the issue of how people breath on the bike, many people try SO SO VERY HARD to get more air in and just hyperventilate themselves which, I imagine, can increase the number of problems you have with asthma on the bike. Basically if you didn’t have asthma and others can hear you panting loudly you are doing it suboptimally. Naturally if this hurts people who don’t have asthma it would be worse for people who don’t
