My country’s TT nationals and Road Race Nationals are in november ( yes I know, screwed up timing, but hey, blame my federation.)
the TT is the day before the Road Race. I have 2 sets of race wheels :
Older HED Jet 5 clinchers ( Pre C2)- I may be able to borrow a HED Jet disc to go along with them.
Older Zipp 404 Tubulars ( Pre Firecrest)
now I have a TT bike and a Road bike, obviously the TT bike is going to be used for the TT and the road bike for the road race. Unfortunately have only one powermeter- a Quarq and I will be transferring it from the TT bike to the road bike immediately after the road bike. between driving to the place, swapping the powermeter, and of course other errands I may need to do, I want to reduce any amount of mechanical work (like changing brake pads) that I already have to do besides swapping the powermeter over, so I’m hoping to use seperate wheels on the two seperate days.
The course is a flat out and back ( for both TT and RR.) yaw looks to be between 3-4 degrees on the day.
recommendations for reducing the mechanical hassle but still having the most aero?
There is no need for mechanical hassle. If you choose to use the tubulars for both races, then just buy/borrow an extra set of carbon brake pads and have everything set up before race weekend.
If you’re gonna be at low yaw (you mentioned 3-4*), it probably won’t matter much at all. I would put the aluminum brake track on the road bike and a disc cover on the TT bike.
As an aside, if you’re trying to cut mech time, you could probably just leave the powermeter on the TT bike. Unless you’re planning an extended break or solo effort in the road race, I wouldn’t expect your power readings to be that important.
Bring a friend along who knows how to change brake pads and a crank. Assuming you are not flying to the event which might make it cost prohibitive, you must have at least one cycling buddy who would love playing “pro mechanic/soigneur” for you for two days in exchange for a few beers, a free hotel room and getting to hang out and watch a couple national championship races.
Vittoria Corsa CX (23’s, I think?) on the zipp 404 tubies. Not the most aero but I think they do well in the Crr tests so that will probably make up for it.
For the Jets, have 3 options: conti GP4000S 23c ( used) , Michelin Pro Race 4 Service Course 23c (new) , Schwalbe Ultremo ( not the most ideal since they are used also, and I didn’t particularly like them-roll well but abit fragile.)
As it’s still about a month away I have plenty of time to get new tyres for the HEDs if needed though. tubies might be abit more complicated since it involves re-gluing.
