What does everyone think about doing 2 ironman races in one year with multiple other half and olympic races? so far I have gone for strawberry fields tri in march (?) then wildflower then off to a few locl oly distance races then full vineman then LA malibu and then florida IM.
does that sounds like too much racing, I am planning on using vineman as a tryout race for IM florida so I can get my orientation done for a big race at a slow pace and then blitz florida? is this too much? does everyone can all the small races for the IM season so they can concentrate on bigger races?
I guess I kinda did that last year: IM New Zealand, Nice Triathlon and one 1/2 IM along with about 8-10 sprint and Olympic distance rces and a few duathlons too.
It was a busy year and I am a little scortched around the edges, but then again I work a lot of hours too and haven’t (in the past) always had the best eating habits.
I had a great year doing it. I didn’t win any races but had some decent performances for me and a lot of fun along the way.
It’s a lot of work and you have to be dilligent about recovery and acknowledge something could tak you out of the action like an injury or some life event, as long as you are good with that, I think you’ll be fine.
I’ve done 2 IMs a year the last 2 years along with a bunch of other races including a 1/2IM each year. I’ve found the second IM tends to suffer a little due to motivation in continually going long but i was still able to do faily well. The key on race day for the second IM was to rachet down expectations a little and start the day off nice and easy. You might find you have trouble maintaining focus all the way to November, but everybody’s different.
Double your pleasure: Preparing for a two Ironman Season
So many races, so little time. Ironman racing is in a boom with new long distance triathlons springing up all over the calendar. But unlike sprint and Olympic distance racing, doing more than one race in a year isn’t as simple as finding an open weekend and sending in your cheque. Training and preparation for an Ironman takes much longer than for a sprint, with as much as four to six months required for preparation. In addition, the recovery time following an Ironman can take anywhere from two to six weeks depending on the athlete, and rushing back to do another one too soon can lead to injury or burnout. More here…
2 in one CALENDAR year was do-able for me…but they were in different racing years. Kona in Oct and Lake Placid in July of the following year. Go do it!
I’ve done 2x year the last three years with an early IM (march or april) and a fall IM in Sept. I usually race bikes in the spring and do a few other tris throughout the year with no ill effect. You might find going from Vineman you will need to really go for active rest for a month. That will be hard to really pull back your training, but you’ll need to do that so you can hit it hard again in Sept. / Oct. to get ready for Florida. If you try to train right through an August IM (i think Vineman is in early August correct?) you might find yourself not recovered enough to have a solid performance in Florida.
Thanks everyone, my ironman training is getting up an on today I swear, I am trying to stop and build up muscle over winter doing weight reps 3 or 4 times a week in the morning and running at night (california is dark after 5!!) I even went for a swim at the weekend in 42 degree rain!!! The weight is now up to 150 and my legs are fresh and new when I run which is a good sign!! I am thankfull that my lady is supporting me through this or I would be training hungry and tired, however she trains more than me so maybe I should be cooking eh?
bu the looks of it 2 in a year is possible, a few months inbetween and lots of rest, now if I could just rest!!! any ideas about vineman and florida wheel choices???
