Hi, I’ve had a tacx for many years and last year I had a kurt road machine, very quiet and strong frame but was not sure about fluid feeling, So now, I think I want to try the 1up usa trainer, but dont really know the feeling, the resistance, noise etc…
We have a couple of 1ups. They are well made but the resistance unit is simply a centrigugal plate pressing against a fiber pad. The resistance curve can be changed by relocating a set of large ball bearings located between the plate and flywheel.
Went from the 1up to computrainers. In comparison the 1up feels jerky and on/off. I use it for TT warmup now and wish I had a fluid trainer. I haven’t used the Kurt Kinetic trainers but from what I hear about them I don’t think the 1up would be an improvement.
I have used a Comptrainer since 2004. I recently obtained a 1 UPUSA trainer due to a need for a portable device while away on an extended trip. The 1 UPUSA is very quiet, easy to mount and transport but the resistance level/curve of resistance is not quite accurate. Some times it can become as the previous poster stated uneven.
I don’t know about the resistance curve, but it can give plenty of it if desired. Is is also good to spin on and stable. Very well made. Plenty quiet. The large drum is a nice touch for not wearing out tires too quickly.

well, it is still a trainer.
if you want something that feels a bit more like the road you’ll need to step up to something like the inside ride rollers. however, for a trainer the 1up is very, very good. it is much more quiet than many other models and has a heavy flywheel that coasts down a bit longer than other, lighter models.
There are no magnets on mine, just the fiber plate.
the 1up operates based on magnetic resistance. yours uses magnets, too, whether you realize it or not.
No magnets on the 1 UP. It is a centrifugal force kind of deal.
Had one for years. VERY quiet and the resistance was good if you got it nice and snug against your tire. It is a nice trainer.
are you certain? if so, i’ll apologize, but from what i understand there are magnets in there. the resistance varies based on speed, and the separation between the magnets plays a role. they are more or less separated the higher or lower the speed.
1up is extremely well made but it is only so-so in practice.
Resistance requires pretty low cadence at high effort.
Also, the way the trainer opens and closes it can be a finger smasher-
I would take a KK any day.
I love mine. I have had it for about 5 years. The only issue I have had (as other have mentioned) is that the resistance seemed to be very inconsistent. I called them and they sent a pre paid postage box, fixed it and shipped it back in a very short amount of time. They customer service is great. It is a bit heavy but very sturdy. It is also very quite.
I have a tacx satroi and I’ve also used the KK road machine as well as the Blackburn-‘licensed’ 1up trainer (called the blackburn ultra).
I far prefer the tacx compared to all three. Adustable resistance allows you to spin or mash as your heart desires (better for simulating climbs). I actually like it more than the KK road machine.
in my experience, the blackburn unit was awful. I could never find a happy level of resistance and found that I was pushing mega watts as soon as I hit 20km/h (~400watts). If I’d back off a little, the resistance would go to 0. I just couldn’t find that happy medium of ~200watts. I tried everything to correct this (cleaning pads, removing ball bearings), but nothing seemed to help. In all fairness, despite the fact that the blackburn unit ‘should’ be the same as the 1-up unit, it would seem that many more people complain about the blackburn Ultra than the 1-up.
The other benefit of the tacx is that they can be purchased (and shipped to N.A.) for less than $200 from most UK cycling websites.

…cuz it’s supposed to be a foot-operated mechanism…/half-pink
To the OP, we have two of them. They have been great in terms of quality, ease of use, consistent resistance (must really tighten the wheel down), quietness, quality and customer service. No complaints…would buy again, even though the general ST consensus is KK.
