Headed up to watch IMMOO on Saturday, but need to get a long run in once I’m there. I don’t feel like doing the course, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a long run starting from downtown. Ideally there will be places to get liquids along the way, or a nice 4/8 mile loop would also work. Thanks in advance.
not sure how long it is but there is a bike path that runs around the lake (the one the race is in) that could be an option.
Follow the link and make one. Pretty cool http://www.usatf.org/routes/

Check out the route for the Madison Marathon. The second half is pretty nice.
Good luck.
As dooley said, I think the path around Lake Monona would be good. I was told by someone who used to live in Madison that this path is actually 13 miles long…don’t know if that’s true but I think it might be close.
Here’s a course map for the Lake Monona 20K. It’s very nice route around Lake Monona.
Care to join me? I’m going slowwwwwwww.
yeah, that course is the loop i was referring to.
If you want hills, do a long run through campus up Bascom Hill then past the hospital through Shorewood Hills to Middleton and back to downtown through Picnic Point, etc. A great scenic route. I know the UW team used to do this years ago (and occasionally ran back across the ice when they were out too long) and this was a primary route when I used to live on the Isthmus.
The route around Lake Monana is a classic and a fairly easy route.
Another great option is to run the trails in the Arboretum. Just get lost and enjoy the weather and ever growing suburbia in a county that failed to identify the need for good urban planning 20 years ago…![]()

I am supposed to do a long run today, but the rain is coming down in sheets. Another day. I will be in MadTown tonight, but I promised the wife I would not do any long workouts (I may be hung over as well). What time are you running? How much money would my wife spend at the outdoor market when I was gone?
PM me your # if you want, and a rough time frame. If for some reason it works, I’d love to do it.

Another common option with some decent views and terrain but nothing outrageous is to loop through the Arboretum on the 10K course, starting in Vilas Park, leaving the East Entrance of the Arb to loop around Monona Bay (NOT Lake Monona, just the bay) going North along the bike course along John Nolen, back around the North side of Monona Bay and back around the Arb and return to Vilas Park. Easy parking by the Zoo and water fountains along the route at several places. About 17 miles if I recall correctly. Some easy hills in the Arb, some trees and residential, some lake views, etc.
