Hicham El Guerrouj is considered by many, including myself, to be the best 1500m runner of all time. And, considered by many to be the best runner of all time. Which brings me to an interesting observation…
Bekele ran his last 400m of the 10,000m in 53 seconds, which is slightly faster than Hicham’s fastest and last lap time of the 1500m. I am in no way playing down Hicham’s race. I am simply saying that I am surprised that people are not speaking more about Bekele’s run performance. Did you see his last lap? Yikes!!! He was absolutely flying!!! And that was after running 24 laps (9600m) in 26’12"!!!
I would say that this guy could very well set the new world record in the near future.
The last lap of the 1500m was run in 52:xx, not 53. And I agree that Bekele could probably set World Records in all of the events above the 800m (not including), except maybe the steeplechase if he concentrated on the shorter events a bit. He’s in a different class.
and btw, he already has the WR (26:20). Many say he is capable of running 26:00 in the future, but is going to lower it bit by bit, atleast until Beijing.
I thought the WR was still held by GEBRSELASSIE Haile. My mistake. Wow…I predicted something would happen that already happened!!! I am goooooooood!!!
Talk about a classy guy…GEBRSELASSIE Haile nutured Bekele and others to surpass his mark. Gotta love that man…few like him.
