Good story.

I talked to him right before the start of IMAZ(his 14th,my1st) but had no idea he was going for a world record.

um… how do they define these “world records”?

The international ultra tri association race calendar has 19 IMs over 5 months, and there are at least a couple of guys on the “tour” that have completed all 19 of them. Mean time for each segment looks to be 12-14hrs.

um… how do they define these “world records”?

It all depends on who is writing the definition. For example: do they mean most “individual” Ironman distance races, or do they include doubles, triples, etc? Indies? If you count these there is no way to verify a record as there is no source of ALL results available. People could even make up their own races just to add to the count.

Do they mean WTC Ironman branded races? In that case there is a verifiable records source. It is a record that can be proven. I can imagine Guiness WBR would use the verifiable source.

Congrats to Michael! Just the travel logistics would drive me crazy.

If you’re fit, and go slow with the goal to merely, i don’t see why it can’t be done. I think the real damage comes when you try to race multiple IMs, and run when you probably should be walking.

What about 20 IM in one calendar year (12 month)?

I met Stefaan Engels after the Elbam Man IM distance in Italy. Very nice guy and I understand the actual world record holder for the number of IM distance races in 12 month.

I think in this guys case he did 15 IM branded events which The Guiness Book has recognised as the world record. There have been a few people who have claimed 31(two in 2004) and one guy who claimed 41(in 2006 I think) but they counted each double iron as two, each triple as three and of course the Deca as ten.I have always been against that way of thinking and believe each Ironman should only count for individual events like they did in Mexico a couple of years ago with the ten seperate Irons in ten consecutive days.

If one had the money and the time then the feat would not be that difficult to achieve. It is why he did it that is important.

I agree! That is why I find Petr V so amazing. He manages to race 10 or so IM per year and come in top 10 on almost all of them. I don’t think Michael is no slouch either.

The Guiness Book has the “record” for IM races at 14. They are NOT all WTC races and I believe there is at least one multiple IM race used. That certainly is incorrect by any definition.

Well the record is probably who spend the most money to do ironman races… I don’t think the difficulty is in the doing the 15 ironman races its
haveing enough vacation and then the money to do them all thats the tough part. what $7500 entry fees,$15,000 to $30,000 travel not to mention
time off. Now thats impressive…(okay 15 ironman races in a year is impressive too but you get my point).

Was Vicenzo the one who claimed 41?

By the way, I finally got to see The Distance of Truth last nite - outstanding!

He must be really healthy.

This isn’t quite as silly as setting the world record for shoving pennies up your butt, but it is pretty close.

Yes Matt it was Vincenzo and he did two decas that year. You also have Chet Blanton from Hawaii who did the Double-Deca many years ago.I think that took him a month.I just want to know where they get the money from?It seems those age-group Euros get looked after pretty well by their local communities and get all kinds of cash given to them.

Ferg is busy training in hope of doing the Terry Fox run and is in danger of losing his “legend” status which will be replaced by a new “mythical” status in Canada.
