145 and 155 mm cranksets? Who makes them?

Looking for a set of each of these for a client. Any ideas? Money not an object.

thanks.

I assume you’re not looking for a track crank like the eBay ones… I do have a 155mm 139BCD crankset with bottom bracket that we’re going to sell (wife tried it, but’s a bit too short for her). PM if you would be interested.

Sinz makes them in 5 mm decrements from 180mm down to 125mm. This nice thing is that they are not only taper square but are also 110mm BCD so they work nicely with compact chainrings! You can be all set up for under $70 including a taper square BB.

That is a really excellent deal.

Zinn custom cranks are nearly $500.

I ride 155mm crank “Carmina” arms made by TA Specialites. I paired them with a Phil Wood bottom bracket and Dura Ace 7900 rings on 130 bcd. I’ve been very happy with this set up. I understand that Lightning can also make a 155mm carbon crankset.

in addition to sinz, check out origin8
.

How complicated is the wrench job to switch BBs to a square taper BB? I currently have a shimano FC-R600 165mm crank with a Hollowtech II BB. I switched from 170mm crank arm length and felt way more comfortable in my hips. Most calculators put me in the 145-155mm crank arm length range, so I would like to try something shorter.

Also, do you know if the Sinz 110 bcd is compatible with the Rotor q-rings?

It’s not difficult to switch BBs if you have the right tool. The only problem is if it’s in there really tight. It can require some serious torque to remove them. It is, however, something that your LBS can do quickly, easily, and cheaply.

For those interested, here are the parts you need for a small crank setup using Origin8 components (as recommended by John Cobb). You can get them directly from the Origin8 website:

http://www.origin-8.com/

21896 - 155 arms, black (lengths 140 to 175 available)
21300 - 107 B/B
22773 - bolt set

I switched from DA 170mm to Origin8 in 160, 155 and 140 now. Easy to do, I picked up these tools:
Park Tool BBT-9 to remove the shimano da bottom bracket
Park Tool BBT-22 to install the square taper bottom bracket
8mm hex key to install the crank bolt
Park Tool CWP-7 to pull out the crank when I went shorter.

I’ve been very pleased with 140 for the last 2 months, no power lost and run much better after bike.

another option is Mark at bikesmithdesign can shorten cranks, good work and great guy

I believe the Lollipop Guild does…

Yep. On my road bike, I’m running 155 cm O8 cranks, 110 BCD, 50/34. On my tri bike I’m running 155 cm O8 cranks, 110 BCD, 52/38.

The Origin8 says it’s for single speed. Will it work with road compact (110 BCD and two chainrings)?

Thanks. Just out of curiosity, what is your inseam measurement and shoe size?

76 cm inseam, 9.5 shoe size

Look at BMX cranks often available wide range (e.g. 135-180mm), I tried 160mm last tri season. First off you will have to change BB to square taper for most styles. I used the origin8 brand (not ones for single speed). They do accept two chainrings, however I noticed that the spider width is wider than your typical road cranks. I used 9sp and found that sometimes the chain would slip in-between the two rings if I did not shift down quick enough.

money no object, I would try to see if Crupi Rhythm Expert Cranks would work, they look top of the line: http://www.crupibmx.com/crank-expert.html , noticed they had 150’s but not 145, not sure why.

From my experience, the BMX guys do not want to play with Roadies/tri-geeks. When I asked about chainline with 107mm BB, they refused to give any info once they sensed I was looking to use these on a road bike and not a BMX.

Good luck, there has been more interest in using shorter cranks and hope some others offer an alternative.

What length BB are you using with the Sinz? They look to be a little lighter than the Origin .

Also took a look at the Crupi crank. If I’m understanding it correctly, it looks as though it would be compatible with a Shimano hollowtech, so wouldn’t have to swap over to a square taper bracket. Then it’s a question of will it fit a double crank?

What determines the 107mm dimension on the bb? Is it the overall including the taper or width of bb, wondering if it’s bike specific or crank specific.

As best I can tell, the biggest factor in the BB length is the number of chain rings (1-3) in use.

Also just got back an email from Crupi, who said "This is a five bolt standard bmx crank set. I don’t think the chainring alignment is suitable for multiple rings. "
