Before I go into any detail and get people going, I was just wondering what happens to your body, in a race, when you take in gel that has been expired for 13 months? Has anyone had any experience with this?
As long as they are in the packet, its ok. I made the mistake of grabbing a gel flask out of mu duffel that was like three weeks old and heading out on a 100 mile ride with it. I gagged then puked, because it was so nasty.
That link was a little nasty but funny…especially since that’s the way I felt at IM USA this year. I wasn’t racing per say this year because I’m getting ready for the double in Oct…but after all the ridiculous hours I put in I was actually on track for a PR, but I was too walk/run after 10KM so I will recover faster. Even if I wanted to run…I wouldn’t have been able to…mile 5 started some major gas. It was painful…mile 15…started to smell really bad…a little embarrassing.
When I started to run…pain…then gas…then run…then pain…then gas. Nutrition was spot on this day. In the medical tent afterwards…I was there because I threw up at the finish line…sprinting from outside the oval so that I wasn’t in the way of someone finishing when I rolled over the line…it caused me to throw up…which is an automatic trip to the medical tent. I told them about the gas…and they said it was very weird because they’ve had literally hundreds of people complaining about that.
When I cleaned out my ironman bags there was one gel from the race still in my fuel belt…of course from the aid station…it was 13 months expired. What the…? So I thought I’d ask just to be educated on this topic. I’m not mad because the farting saved me from not recovering fast enough and I have 50 miles this week to run. Happy to say…almost done!
