10speed cassette on 9speed hub?

Hi All,

I’ve got a road bike with 9speed Ultegra, bought in 2002. I’m getting a new bike with 10speed Ultegra - could I use my 9speed rear wheel and put a 10speed cassette on it? That is, is the hub the same?

Most likely I will get training wheels on my new bike (Tri bike) but I may want to use my older wheels from time to time…or just get the new bike with race wheels instead…

Also, I guess it’s pretty easy to switch cassette if you have the proper tools, isn’t it? Is it OK if you switch cassette on the hub once/twice a month or will it deteriorate the hub or cassette?

yes u can put the 10 sp on the 9 sp wheel.

Buy a new cassette. It is worth it not having to hassle w/ changing it out once or 2 times a month.

But I don’t think you can put 9 speed on a ten speed hub. G

You need a very thin spacer ring (which comes with a new 10-speed cassette).

To change a cassette requires a chain whip, a cassette tool, and a crescent wrench. Do it as many times as you want - no issues.

It only takes a few minutes to swap cassettes and it is far easier to clean or soak the cassette off the bike. I say swap casettes and clean you bike often, … its cheaper.
