-10F : Indoors or out?

Running that is…

I have a nice tready in the workout room with lots o video’s, or risk frozen earlobes outside?

Inside

me thinks the same…

inside
.

I’ve never run on a treadmill in my life, but 0F is where I draw the line between going out and finding something else to do. I mean, people driving by are thinking “WTF is that guy thinking?” and you are thinking “WTF am I thinking?” Besides, it’s going to get hot later today, almost up to 20F.

Why not do weighted hill repeats (aka sledding with the kids) later…

If you planned to have any speed or tempo work in this workout, then I’d stick to the treadmill, but if it is just an easy run, then I’d go outside.

Outside. I commuted on my bike to work the past couple of days with below zero temps. I survived that. It is no problem staying warm running in below zero temps. The body is very efficient at producing heat.

I’m looking forward to a 10 mile run in the Hocking Hills, one of the most scenic parks in Ohio. Should be a winter wonderland with six inches of snow and the single digit temps will keep the crowds away.

Are the weather conditions at every race you do 70 degrees and dry? If not, there’s an advantage to training outside. Plus it’s fun!!

-10 F inside.

And I’m no wimp - was out in just below zero (way worse w/ windchill) the other day. About zero is my threshold. You’ve proven your metal plenty with your cyclocross palmares

I’ve got -20 going on up here… heading to the pool then waiting until a toasty zero is seen until I run.

I’m all into toughing it out and all that manly stuff but there are limits.

HFTU - outside…

I dont race at -10F either (and I nordic ski race, they cancel them at -4F!)

and if it was “single digits” I would have been all over it, I ran at -2F Thurs AM.

Went tready…guess I am a wuss:-)

I can’t believe you even asked the question
.

Went out yesterday and ran 7 steady miles in -6 temps with -25 wind chill.

No problems whatsoever.

We had this discussion going in the 100/100 thread. Personally, I don’t see how wearing 4 layers of cloths makes you tougher. It’s not like it is a mentally tough run when dressed appropriately - if dressed right, it should be a comfortable run?? If you under dressed for the run, then maybe there is a toughness factor that can benefit you later, but I wouldn’t recommend this.

Inside, no question. I get bronchospasms immediately when I run below 0F. Not worth spending the rest of the day coughing.

Kurt,

I don’t think the FIS is too far off in with their low limit. The risk of frostbite to exposed skin (the facial areas usually) increases substatially below 0F/-20C. I have frostbitten my nose a few times skiing at just below these temps, so it seems to make sense.

Inside. Cold weather is tough on the body. Bulky clothes only interfere with your normal movements and that can lead to odd injuries. I live in Minnesota. -29 when I woke up yesterday. It was too cold to workout inside as well. The Sun will come out tomorrow…

“I dont race at -10F either”

Wait a minute, didn’t you bail on the Pumpkinman this year because it was cloudy out?

weather was far from the reason that day homeboy : zero sleep, family stress, etc…it could have been 70F and sunny and I would have bailed that day!

Ditto on the HTFU…
-18 and just got back in from a 6 mile run.
As long as you have the right “stuff” should not be a problem.
