I just come home from Spirit of Racine. - Calm lake, great temp and a flat run helped me and many others PR for the half iron distance!
At the Pro awards the Race Director (HFP Racing) said that they will be adding the 101 distance next year !

No surprise. With the Spirit of Racine, they have relationships with the community, probably already have a course in mind, and have the permitting process well-understood. Taking 101 to Racine is an easy putt for them - well easier anyway.
Hopefully it is a late season race. Late aug would be cool. Did they mention a possible date?
Since they said they’re adding it I would assume it would be on same weekend as the Spirit of Racine, so the second to last weekend in July.
Well that ought to be very convenient for DKT!!
Racine had a running festiva put on by HFP that had a 30k run as one of the distances. I would assume that they did that for a test of the running course for the One-0-One. So they probably already have checked out a bike coures. The swim course would probably be pretty easy for them to set up in the huge lake. I just can’t figure out where they plan on putting everyone in the transition. Or should I say Transitions.
I can’t see how the city could close down (or I guess block) many of its roads for a tri on two different weekends in Summer. I would have to say that they are going to be on the same weekend.
Which lake is the swim in? You said calm and that doesn’t sound like Lake Michigan to me.

Lake Michigan. Considering the 6-8 foot swells on Thursday, and 3-4 foot swells on Saturday, it was calm for Lake Michigan…

It was in Lake Michigan. It wasn’t THAT calm, but, it was definitely calm by Lake Michigan standards. Overall, could not have asked for a better day. Great temp and mild wind.
The only “knock” was the way the swim was set up this year. It was a point-to-point swim. So, you had to walk almost a mile down the beach from the transition area for the swim start. Swam from the shore, out about 200 yards, then parallel to the shore for about a mile, then in about 200 yards. I liked the way it was set up but, the walk to start was long and the run from the water up the entire beach through the sand was tough.
He did say the date too ; July 19 and 20, 2008.
The swim was in Lake Michigan, and most people I talked to at the race had never seen it this calm before. I overheard someone saying that the best pros swam about 4 minutes faster than last year.
What was the water temp? Joe’s wanted to do this race, if it’s a 101 in 2008, it makes it even more tempting. He can’t swim in cold water though (triggers his AFib). We both grew up in Milwaukee and all I can remember of swimming in Lake Michigan is COLD!

That’s how it’s been ever year that I remember though - ?
DKT swim ±30 seconds from last year - I was ± by about the same to.
The results are up on their website. The overall winner actually swam faster last year: David Thompson 2006: 25:44.25 - 2007: 26:14.
The water was just right - not too cold , not too warm.
I would kill for a late season race…even september or october. If you’re not from the great lakes area, you may not know, but Lake Michigan gets warmer and warmer through september. It’s actually QUITE warm in sept-oct! Would be an awesome, “get our last fix” type event.
The lake wasn’t THAT cold. If you were tough you could have handled it w/o a wetsuit.
Water temps were 66 yesterday. I’m not sure what they traditionally are this time of year.
The post race email Scott sent out last night said the half and the 101 are on the same day next year.
I bet the runs share the same course with the 101 just going another mile or so down the road. Not sure about the bike though, although there is an abundance of rurual roads out there that they could detour the 101 on for another 14 miles.
Transition is the big question - that place is full with 2k people, unless they expect about the same total number of peeps, but split between races.
That’s pretty interesting because he has been swimming a ton faster this year in most of his races…
IMO - the lake was a bit rough on the way out to the first buoy - I had a heck of a time getting to it - and coming into the beach there was a pretty good outward pull that slowed me down a lot.
The other thing to remember is that in racine there is a good 60-90 second run up the beach to transition where your time actually stops.
