1000 Island Tri/Du Roll Call (1)

Hey,

Anyone coming to the 1000 Island Tri/Du on Sunday, Aug 19?

I’m 75% committed. I just got back from 2 weeks on family vacation with no swimming and minimal “filler runs” and don’t feel like I am ready to race yet (although I did do lots of 2-3 hour hard rides)…however, I have a big base from Ironman LP prep, so it is lame to not use it when there is an olympic tri within a 50 min drive from your home…so on Thursday, I will make my final decision

We’re actually skipping it this year after doing for the last six years in a row. Got a Saturday wedding to go to. Should be back next year.

where is this race in Canada or the dark side of the river ??

dirt

Can I still get in?

no…they’re all saving themselves for the race in Calabogie (NOT!) I’d say if attendance doesn’t improve for the race, drastically, then you can pretty much kiss the race goodbye after this year. Last year turned out pretty well but I’ve heard this year is pathetic. Guess you all like Sommersault more than you’re letting on. You guys have something personal against the HSBC series or something?

Perhaps you should do some fact checking before posting.

I was the RD for the 1000 Island Tri the past 4 years. This year, I am in the Sprint Tri.

I also signed up for the Off Road Tri next Sunday (26 Aug). As did my husband and a friend of mine.

If John had picked a better date for his Calabogie event, it may have attracted more people to it.

"something personal against the HSBC series or something? "

Better stuff in your goodie bag, better food at HSBC, but otherwise Somersault and HSBC is similiar. I do like the way HSBC puts your bikes by AG in T1. Best organized tri on Ontario I’ve been is Kingston, which is independent. Brockville 1000 Island is a good tri also, the St. Lawrence River is warm and clear and an attractive town. We are doing the Calobogie sprint on the Sunday…

The 1000 Island Tri/Du is located in Brockville, ON (Eastern Ontario)

Right in the heart of the 1000 Islands.

The swim course is in the St. Lawrence, Bike course goes along Hwy 2 (along the river) and the run course goes through part of downtown and then into St. Lawrence Park.

Scenic course and lovely town. (But I’m biased as I live and work in Brockvegas)

YES!

You can sign up at the 3 Late entry/Race Kit Pick up times they have.

1 is in Ottawa on Thursday (I’d check that if I were you, could be friday?)

Saturday from 3-5 in Brockville, on Blockhouse Island - race site.

Sunday from 6:30 - 8:00 on Blockhouse Island.

Info is at www.somersault.ca

Any race has better food then Somersault

The KTown Tri is FANTASTIC! I haven’t done it for 2 years but it’s a great course and race!

So HSBC racks by AG? I’m doing their Off Road Tri and have never done an HSBC race before.

reread my post and I can see where you would have taken it as a direct shot at you…and for that I am very sorry. If anything it was directed at the people of the Ottawa area in general for there lack of attendance at the HSBC event. I will track you down and personally appologize to you on Sunday (I might be getting roped into doing the announcing for the Saturday event). Perhaps it is my personal bias to John and the Multisport crew that prompted my original post…more people need to come out to this event though. Especially teams for the Multiman…totally awesome idea for a tri event.

I thought of doing the Soloman on LP fitness but have done jack since then so am bailing. May look at the spint though…

Any race is better than a Somersault race…sorry.

As for best organized race in Ontario, how about Muskoka?

Good luck to those in Brockville, beautiful location for a tri, I did it a couple years ago (when the swim was waaaaay short)

Boney,
do you mind sharing what you think is wrong or not good with Somersault races?
Thanks,
Fred.

It’s only my opinion…

  1. I find that they are more concerned with maximizing number of entrants than putting on a decent race. that is, during your Oly tri for example, there are people on the course competing in nine different events (some would argue this might be a good thing).

  2. Their prizes are weak. Win your age group and you get the same medal that any finisher gets. Even a pair of dry fit socks would be better.

  3. Their distances, in races I’ve particpated in, seem to be incredibly inaccurate.

  4. Overpriced, better events with better of the above can be found for same prices.

Having said all that, I do compete in some of their events, I probably only have these feelings because in Eastern Ontario, as i’m sure you know, there are so many awesome races within driving distance.

Glad you got your bike back.

Kentinger…see my thread about Soloman…let’s support the John Salt Series on that thread, rather than bashing (at least that is how it comes out) the athletes of Ottawa and the Somersault Series.

As for 1000 Islands, I am now up to 85% committed. This morning’s ride was hard and good. I have not gone that hard since the Peteerborough Half Ironman which was 5.5 weeks ago. It felt good to go hard again. I’ll run tomorrow and if my legs feel like they can turn over reasonably, I’ll drop money on an entry fee…if not, I’ll save my money and do some hard training for the Canadian Half Iron on Labour Day weekend.

I do agree with Irongirl about the Soloman date. I suggested that the third weekend of June after Muskoka would be ideal. It would be 4 weeks out from Ironman LP and many might use it for preparation, especially with an Aquabike option.

“it was directed at the people of the Ottawa area in general for there lack of attendance at the HSBC event”

What would you expect about Ottawa people - they’re either cilly servants working for the fed or silicon valley wannabes. :=)

Seriously, I think there are a few reasons why Calabogie hasn’t taken off, but I won’t go into them. Instead, if HBSC drops the race they should go back and have a good look at an event in Prince Edward County south of Belleville. The area could provide one of the best venues in Ontario - great cycling roads, already a marathon running event there and a few excellent potential swim areas. I know both HBSC and Somersault have looked over the area in the past but neither has stepped up to the plate yet.

& they have not put an event in the PEC area because some folks do not want to see an event over there during the summer.

Fred.

Yeah, it might be hard to do in the summer due to the beach traffic at Sandbanks. I’ll guess that’s why the Wasaga Beach event is the weekend after Labour Day
