Spend $150 on a Weber charcoal kettle grill. Save the rest and buy another one when the weber rusts away in 5 years. Or spend $1000 and buy another when it rusts away in 5 years…

Traeger

How do wood pellet grills work? Why that over gas or charcoal?

The only problem with that is the time it takes to heat up and how small it is. I love those grills though

I think you first need to decide what fuel you want to cook with.

Charcoal? BGE or Kamodo

Wood pellet? Trager

Gas/propane? Genesis or Napoleon LEX 485 (equivalent to Genesis in quality with a few more bells and whistles)

They make different sizes.

Or if you need a really big one, go down to a metal working shop and ask them to make you one out of a 55 gallon steel drum. should be able to get one well under $1k.

And for when you need quick heat, head down to Walmart and get a $150 gas grill. The food will taste the same as on a $1000 gas grill…

Earlier this year I bought a Genesis II e-335. Hands down the best bbq I’ve ever owned. Runs hot and cooks evenly. I know a few people with Webers that are 10+ years old and they still look brand new.

Assuming you want gas, go with the Weber. On the Traeger, my neighbor has one and smokes amazing food, but as you said, time. He generally starts stuff 2-8 hours in advance.

BGE

Add to it the indirect cooking plate (convEGGtor), bottom fire grate, a looftlighter, a smokeware cap, and use rock wood charcoal (the BGE brand isn’t good). Get a good wireless thermometer, too. For peace of mind during long cooks, I also have a Flame Boss which is very nice but not necessary as the egg hold temp well without it.

I haven’t even touched our gas Weber since the BGE took up residence. For regular grilling, it’s very quick to get up to temp.

There’s no need to spend $1,000 on a grill.

Who said anything about need?

No one.

If you are going gas you may as well just save some time and go get the weber genesis 315 this afternoon. You’ll look at all the other ones and then you’ll still buy it.

Parts are replaceable, it is built pretty well, works really well, holds up to weather (but you’ll keep it covered too) and comes in under budget.

whatever else you do i think i’d buy the service plan, if that includes them coming out, and for no deductible. because i don’t care how much you spend, the mthrfkng igniter will fail w/in 2yr, and you want the satisfaction of them having to come out to replace it.

Weber Genesis if you’re going with gas. Mine has survived >10 years of living outdoors through IL winters (covered when not in use) and is still going strong. No rust issues and the original ignitor still works. Mine is hard piped to the house NG, so I can just flip a stopcock and I’m good to go within minutes.

My dad got rid of both Traegers he has owned. Can’t get them hot enough to sear a good steak. Which I found to be an accurate assessment using my FIL’s.

They are okay as a smoker, but suck as a dedicated grill.

We have a Weber kettle (my grill), small 2 burner char broil (wife’s grill) and offset smoker and I just bought a cabinet style propane smoker.

The kettle is 4 years old and looks the same as the day we assembled it.
