1 week Vegan and counting

I went cold turkey from full scale meat eating, processed food eating, sugar consuming, etc. etc. to a Vegan diet for the past week. Once I got over the sugar withdrawal (no more daily candy bars, cookies, etc), I have to admit that I feel pretty damn good. I don’t know if I will keep this up, but it looks promising. One thing trying to eat Vegan does, it makes you really study what is on the labels of the foods you consume. For some, that may seem obvious, but not for me. I just did not pay attention down to the very last ingredient. The biggest difference I see, is that I have to force myself to drink water. I have no thirst. Whereas before I felt thirsty to drink during the day.

Oh yeah, what a great time of year to try to do this as well. Christmas cookies and sweets everywhere you look.

Good for you W2S. Let us know how it goes. I’ve been a vegetarian since 1993 and I agree that the lifestyle definitely makes you aware of what you’re putting into your body.

What are you going to eat then? Where do you shop at? Curious what your past meals were for the day. I wonder if I could ever adopt the vegan lifestyle since I like my current, sugar consuming one way too much. But maybe if I could try it for a week or two I might get hooked on it. I eat tofu sandwiches because I don’t cook. Does soy milk fit your diet?, er lifestyle.

Mmmmmmmm. You’re making me hungry.

Thank you for helping save the world. I mean it.

I’m finding it takes a bit of work to find food I can eat under a Vegan diet. I am eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, grains. I may be starting an addiction to hummus (sp).

My normal diet was granola bar for breakfast. Sandwich and chips and soda for lunch (sometimes McDs, Subway, etc) and dinner was your normal meat and potatoes type fare. In between, the snacking on sweets.

I bought some tofu yesterday. Never had it before. I will let you know how it goes. I even bought a Vegan pizza. Imagine that - pizza with tofu cheese.

I slice the tofu up and put it between two pieces of bread and put some guacomole on there. There used to be a bread I bought at Wild Oats back when that was made from sprouts but tasted (and looked) like regular bread. I think it had “life” or “jacob” in the name. They kept it in the freezer section.

I used to eat Hummus all the time but I went through it so fast and it wasn’t cheap. I think it would be hard to have a lot of variety with it though.

I like mayonnaise on my cold turkey.

Hummous is *very *inexpensive, you just need to make it yourself. I made about 2 liters of it this morning, and it cost me about $5.

Above is a very simple recipe (not the one I follow, but looks OK, and I’m too lazy to write mine down :0) )

You don’t need to skin the beans if you blanch them.

.

Looks pretty easy, I like all the different flavors so it would be fun to experiment with different herbs, spices, olives, etc. I’ll put the recipe in with the kitchenaid I’m going to get my wife.

Is egg nog vegan friendly?

If it is, you have to try Silk soy milk egg nog. It is the best. Even if you want to spice it up a little, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

Is that stuff good?

My wife drinks soy milk and I have never tried it.

I’ll have to look for it tonight.

It doesn’t taste weird or anything. Pretty much like milk. I really like the chocolate which has a strong european chocolate taste to it. I probably go through 1.5 gallons a wk by myself. The vanilla is okay not overpowering as some say the chocolate is. But I’d probably meet to truck at the dock for the egg nog. I will sometimes drink an entire quart at once.

I stopped drinking dairy milk years ago - I like soy milk, though there are several different brands available which have varying taste.

Also note that virtually all Soy Beans in the US are GMO - whereas most Soy Bean based products available in Europe are non-GMO. This may/may not concern you. Depends on whether you are concerned about Growth Hormone being given to your cattle I guess.

Words of caution:

-do not eat the tofu plain. (it’s an aquired taste) - cook it with something, and it will take on that flavor. Think SPICES, or a stir-fry.

-do not expect the pizza to taste like “real” pizza. Tofu-based cheese is, again, an aquired taste. It’s not bad, you just have to get used to it

hee hee. “I went cold turkey from full scale meat eating”

was that intentional?!

You should give seitan a try. Similar to tofu but with a meatier texture, less fat & more protein. Great in stir-fry dishes, pad thai and such.

I’ve been doing my best to keep vegan for about 2 months now. I feel fabulous too. Cutting out dairy has been amazing for my training. I never realized how lactose intolerant I was until I stopped consuming milk products! I have a little vegan recipe blog I’ve been tinkering with:
