#1 Reason to do Halifax 101 race

PAAARRRRTTTTYYYYYY!!!

Althought I’ve never been there, Halifax has a reputation as one great town to rip it up.

Is it me, or has the post-race piss up become a thing of the past in recent years? Halifax is a good place to bring it back!

Edit: A shout out to all the kiwi’s I had beers with at the Kingston Hotel after the Canberra ITU champs… I’ll have to work on my boat racing…

I believe it has four Universities. The terrain is awesome, rolling hills etc. Good Seafood, big enough to have big city amenities but not too big. My brother lives there. His wife’s family runs a hotel there right by the waterfront. September may be a little cool temperature wise, also isn’t the Canadian Half/Full in Ottawa the same weekend?

Yes, same weekend. I was actually considering the Ottawa race… used to live there about 10 years ago.

Now, I’ve been offered a free place to stay if I do the Halifax race… very tempting!

I visited NB and PEI and loved them… I’m sure NS is just as good or better!

I’ve travelled to the maritimes quite a bit, and I find the people in Nova Scotia (and Newfoundland) to be some of the friendliest people in the world. The hospitality is outstanding, and they seem genuinely glad to host you, going out of their way to make you feel welcome.

A couple of years ago I biked the Cabot Trail with a friend - a 4 day killer ride, with panniers and road bikes - and every day the locals would astonish us with their hospitality. People offered us dinner with their families, places to sleep at night, boat rides…it was crazy. They would drive by in motorhomes as we were grinding up hills, and meet us at the top, cheering us on like it was the Tour. One day was hot, and a car pulled up beside us with bottled water and coke - they had seen us ride by and thought we could use a cold drink. The people all over Nova Scotia are truly amazing.

We were planning on camping the entire way and cooking our own food, but we ended up eating at peoples houses and sleeping in their yards every night.

The area around Halifax in particular is gorgeous, and it’s sure to be one of the most beautiful races in the world.

Now I’ve lived in every province east of Manitoba plus a stint in Alberta. The joys of engineering co-op. Halifax is a great party place. Many many nights at the Lower Deck, the liquer Dome, Slit Crow, The Misty Moon (not there anymore, but they had loonie drafts)…etc then around 2:00-3:00’ish off to the Pizza corner for Za or Donairs. The only ones I know of that didn’t have a good time in Halifax are the BNL…they even wrote a song about it.

IMHO however the number one party place in Canada is St. John’s NFLD. I had a six month co-op at a oil refinery in NFLD and I can tell you the weekends spent down on George Street were THE Greatest! It’s too bad Corner Brook is on the otherside of the Island.

That’s Split Crow not Slit Crow -)) I remember when the Split Crow opened around 1979. It was just a few years after the transformation of downtown Halifax started. Back in the late 1960s there was nothing exciting in downtown Halifax. Fortunately, some smart people realized all those old buildings and the waterfront actually had some value.

September 2 could be 80 or it could be 55 or it could be a hurricane. The last few years have seen some of the warmest ocean water ever off Nova Scotia, which has meant beautiful weather late into the fall. It also meant hurricane Juan in 2004.

 That didn’t sound right did it.I’m in Ottawa today with a couple of Keiths in me already.

BTW, for being in Upper Canada Ottawa is a pretty good party place as well! So there wouldn’t be a problem having a good time after the Ottawa HIM. Well it’s off to The Market for a few more pops and Maritime music at The Heart and Crown.
