1/2 IM Training Program

I realize you get what you pay for, but having said that, are there any FREE 1/2 IM Training programs out there. Competing at Eagleman in June, as 58 yo, and want to get an idea of a good training foundation. I know I will change some volume and intensity, but still would like to see the structure of 1/2 IM training.
Thanks

Here is one I published a few years ago:

Feedback on finishing times have ranged from 4.5 to 6.5 hours so there’s lots of individual variance. You’ll almost certainly want to adapt to your own strenghts/weaknesses, schedule, and current fitness.

Happy training,
Scott

I used Scott’s plan when I did my first HIM in 2005 at the end of my first year of triathlons. I managed 5:30 even though I missed way more workouts than I should have.

I realize you get what you pay for

Not true. Great Free Full and Olympic plans on opentri.com.

since you indicated some fllexability I’m sure you could find a happy medium bewteen the two. The Ultra (full) plan has great bike sessions designed for the trainer and wouldn’t be too much for HIM prep duirng the winter months.

good luck

There is one in the February 2008 issue of Triathlete Magazine. I’m using it and while it isn’t very detailed, if you have any experience, you’ll be able to fill in the gaps. It is a 12 week program, so I recommend you already have a base going into it. PM me if you want more “details”.

There is another 16 week program in Triatlhlete magazine also later in the year.

Do you know which month it is in?

The Ironman preview edition, I think it was November. I am going to use this one this summer; it’s a 16 week program and the focus is on intensity as opposed to volume. I have newborn twins, so my training time this summer is likely to be limited.

Does anyone know if that 12 week Triathlete Mag article is online anywhere? My 2 yr old tore up that issue months ago and and I went back to find it and realized that HIM training issue is the one she got to. I’ve been on Triathlete Mag website, but all you can do is order the entire back issue… I was just looking for the one article? Thanks!

I used the following plan for my first 1/2:

I modified it to fit my schedule, and added a couple bricks, but I figure you will have to tweak any plan you find. I was happy with the results, and I’m going to use the plan again this year.

I used the Triathlete mag’s book by Matt Fitzgerald. It’s called “Essential Week to Week Triathlon training Guide” and it has 40 diff plans on it for different distances. It is great and comprehensive.
