1/2 IM - To Protein or Not To Protein?

Do you take in any protein during your 1/2 IM races or no? I tried it once and did not find it made a difference, plus the source (Perpetuem) I found to be disgusting in the heat. I feel like all the liquid sources of protein available are quite nasty, and then solid sources such as Clif Bars have fiber which might…ummmm…be problematic.

What have you found the pros and cons to be for spiking your HIM nutrition with proten and how has it helped or hurt you?

No, keep it simple. Protein is for preventing muscle breakdown and recovery. Add protein to your daily diet though. And recover after the race with protein added meal/drink.
I used accelerade gels and drinks before but never saw any added bonus other than foaming in the drinks due to protein!

hey there…can I recommend the following?

Instead of Perpetuam, try Hammer’s Sustained Energy. I always “doctor” mine up with a little bit of Hammer Gel to add some flavor to it. It is the only protein that I take during 70.3 events and it saved my tail at Rhode Island 70.3.

The protein saved your tail or the Sustained Energy?

I am thinking maltodextrin in sustained energy

I think overall, Hammer Nutrition products saved my tail…and I am not a Hammer sponsored athlete or pushing their sales. I consider myself to be pretty fit aerobically, but not the fast girl on the course by any means. I did however, feel really good the whole time I was on the course, and I think a big reason for this is the quality products used. Here is what I did for Rhode Island 70.3 in terms of product use only

Before the swim: About 12ounces of HEED 2 hours before the swim and a gel right before I jumped in
After the swim: a gel
During the bike: HEED/water for waterbottle #1, then, I switched over to Sustained Energy/Water and Gel mix for bottle #2.
On the run: gel every 40 minutes or so

good luck everybody
