Has anyone looked at the bike elevation profile for 1/2 IM Disney?
I’m really not good at reading these things as I do not have much of an ability to guage elevation on my own training rides.
Is this a hilly ride? The visual view of the elevation profile looks that way, but… Can’t imaging that it is having been on the Disney property a number of times and have no real memory of any hills.
If the link works right, this should be a topographical map starting at Bay Lake, which is where transition is. If you scroll north and try to trace the majority of the course, I think you’ll find that most of the course is pretty flat. Below (if this link works also) is the grid right near the “Degree of Difficulty” turnaround point (look for Marsh and Williams Road to get your point of reference to the course map).
Looks like brief rollers you go over and back at the turnaround. Don’t think it’s anything to worry about, and actually may be a nice break for your leg muscles (unlike Panama City course). I’d have more concerned about the wind, which was kind of a bitch at IM FL. Speaking of, any Orlando area residents can help out with this one?
what you will never have in FL is steep hills, any elevation changes will be slow and steady. Ill see you guys there, im doing it too, should be fun. Did you check out the run profile too? theres 3 ft of elevation change (at least it was the last time i checked it)
The course is hillier than you would think (crazy, huh, that Centeral Florida has hills!). But fortunately you are not hitting the nasty 12-15% hills on the GFT course (ala Sugar Loaf). The Disney course has a few tough buggers that start hitting about 30 miles out. No triple needed. An 11-23 is fine. I personally ride a 12-27, but I regularly ride the steeper hills too.
My club site has a post on it describing the Disney bike course in detail. Check it out: www.windermereroadies.com. The site was down this a.m., but should be up shortly.
The wind is usually the real bitch. Can’t predict what it will be like in several weeks, but it seems like the wind has been blowing 12-20 MPH almost daily. Last night we rode part of the Disney course (our Wed ride called the Fruit Loop), and the wind was just plumb nasty.
If anyone of you have done the GFT 1/2 course, I think this course would ride about 1 MPH faster. Or, comparatively, maybe 1 MPH slower than Gulf Coast.
