My greatest contribution to the triathlon community - the lost Doug Stern threads
Quote | Reply
For those who are newer to the forum, Doug used to provide a lot of swim advice to the forum before he passed away in 2007. He truly was one of the great treasures that this forum had to offer. Off and on I had toyed with the idea of collecting his old threads so that they can continued to be shared.

Here's the most recent. More to come!

He just had a fantastic demeanor. I remember one thread where someone was being really obnoxious with him and kept telling him he was 100% wrong, but would never elaborate why. Doug just rolled with it, and *I* eventually started a fight with the guy (I'm getting better at avoiding those).

I still go back and read those threads. One day, when I had a land line, my phone rang. I answered that phone maybe 1 out of 500 incoming calls. When it rang that morning, for some reason I dropped everything I was doing, and answered the phone. It was Doug. Next thing you know, it's 2 hours later.

Doug was an awesome guy, we had many good conversations on the phone about swimming and life.

great idea on bringing these back to life. There is so much good info buried years back on ST. I don't think people really have any clue as to the depth of knowledge that exists on this site.

This is fantastic, thanks Barry. It would be nice if this kind of compilation could be perma-posted at the top. Really good stuff.

Tangential to DDs comment about the search function, I recently did a search that produced a thread on strength-training for cyclists from I think 2004. Same exact debate and some of the same players - holy staying power!

Thanks for posting Doug's threads. I loved him too. During my first real open water swim experience, he was coaching. He yelled at the top of his lungs at us swimmers from a row boat with a bull-horn. We were laughing so hard because he'd row a few strokes, then yell, then row more...yell more... following us around the lake... and we listened to him. He was an awesome coach.

Thanks for putting this together. On a forum that 99% concentrated on the bike, Doug was the wealth of knowledge on the swim. When reviewing these again, I'm sure I'll find some old posts where he's giving me pointers. Never got the chance to do the Curacao swim click - I could have used it.

Bump for holiday weekend reading, inspired by the link to Gerry Rodriguez in the post about (not) counting strokes per length. Doug wrote about concepts in such a simple, easy to grasp manner.

Always wanted to attend one of his open water camps after reading Tom D's experience that he so eloquently wrote about.

Many Thanks Barry! As a non swimmer Doug's Posts were priceless. More importantly Mr. Stern was always a gentleman and a pillar of integrity. There is far too much self promotion and mud slinging on this site, but it is/was the endless contributors to the site like Doug that make this place worth it. If anyone can make the angels swim with wings in heaven it will be Mr. Stern

Best,
Greg

Thanks for this! Great advice, and cool to learn about Doug Stern.

Loved this gem:

"If you kick with a kickboard and have your head out of the water your will need to use your abdominal muscles to keep your back flat. It is also the only time in a workout when you can talk to someone else while training."

Barry - Funny you did this. I was very focussed on Doug's teaching on ST a few months ago, and compiled all of his insights into a word document. I tried to categorize them a bit, to make the document sort of book like. I think it is about 90 pages long. PM me you email address and I'll mail it to you.

RIP Doug, you are missed. I learnt more from your lessons on ST than any swim coach has managed to teach me.

Turns out Doug had a hand at putting a fasttwitch guy on the US Olympic swim team:

Quote:
Ervin had never been to New York City. Inspired by Doug Stern, a triathlon swimming coach he met through Hall and briefly worked for, Ervin called Merseburg, who was a senior swimmer at Cal when Ervin was a freshman. Merseburg, a drummer, told Ervin he could play with his band and suggested he earn money by teaching a few hours a week at his school.

brazil I would love to have that e-book too. I found Doug's quoted stuff from BarryP useful to refine my kick timing and rotation. It has been a blessing with some added speed.
