Should I put aluminum foil on my roof to keep my house cool?
My bedroom is on the 3rd floor of my townhouse and it gets murderously hot during summer days. There is no attic space.

If I stapled one layer of aluminum foil to my roof, would it make my bedroom cooler during the day?

Not necessary, a simple aluminum hat would suffice.

Please post pictures once you've put it on, and enjoy the cool air.

white poster board would do the trick. i dont think i would staple it though, you dont want to be causing any leaks.

Since it's not your building to modify , the normal attic vent enlarging and fan installations are out .
Do the morning airing out and close up tight. Mimicking a double pane window with card board / plastic could help .
In new Zealand they paint roofs white with a latex paint like motor homes have .

The foil would work if there is
an air space between the foil and roof . Bootleg in a hi-performace window or wall A/C unit $200 - $500 much better
than the older units . Once a house gets heat soaked its hard to cool if the walls and roof aren't insulated .

If you added the aluminum foil, it would have the added benefit of keeping the prying eyes off the governement from seeing what you are doing behind closed doors.

Yes, definitely staple it down. What you want is hundreds of tiny holes in your waterproof roof membrane next time it rains.

You pussies have obviously never put an asphalt shingle on. They're NAILED on with roofing nails which will put your little pussyman Swingline stapler staples to ever lovin' shame.

It depnds on whether the heat is from the roof getting hot, or from the hot air up from within your house (convection).
If the former, aluminium foil would reflect the radiant heat from the sun thus keeping the room cooler.
If the latter, the foil would act as insulation keeping the heat in, the same way a shiny steel kettle stays hotter for longer than other finishes.
You could prove whether convection or radiation is the most important source by keeping the door to the room shut for a day and comparing how hot it gets to a day with having the door open.

Here in New Zealand most modern roof paints of any color contains zinc oxide which reflects the sun's heat. I repainted our roof a couple of years ago with a dark green paint containing it and it was amazing how much cooler it stayed on hot sunny days compared to the old paint.

You can also get insulated ceiling tiles.

Thanks for distracting me from my totally tedious work on my company accounts !

Funny, I just checked my asphalt-shingled roof, and there's not a nail to be seen. Does the rain reach your roofing nails?

Forget your pink font?

The nails go through a water sealing part of the shingle. Those holes are then overlapped with more shingles, untill the crown of the roof, where tar and a cap top it all off. Pretty water tight like that. I wouldn't recommend random holes in the roof. And yes, I have done a bit of roofing, both metal and shingle. Neither are enjoyable!

Try to keep it succint here: On a new roof (or one cleared of old shingles) if the roof decking is less than 3/4-inch thick, the nail should penetrate through the decking. For three tab shingles 1-inch long, galvanized roofing nails are recommended by the National Roofing Contractors Association.

The leg length of the common house stapler is 8mm at the longest. You would never achieve full-depth penetration of the shingle with a staple. Ergo, you cannot make a tile roof leak using your handy-dandy swingline stapler.

Q.E.D. you pussies.

p.s. Ken. Did you really crawl up on your roof and pull back a shingle to determine exactly where your roofing nails lived? I got $20 that says that that statement is fictional.

If you re-read the OP, it seems pretty clear to me that this guy has a flat roof over his head, not a pitched roof. Of course, we all know that a shingled roof must have some pitch to it to allow the water to run off well, else it will back up under the shingles and penetrate at the nails. Many newer flat roofs don't have the old-style built-up covering with layers of roofing felt, hot asphalt, and gravel, but a thin, continuous rubbery membrane. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to staple through one of those.
