zipp 404/808 on a budget

I want to get a setup similar to a 404/808, but don't want to pay the money for the name brand. What do other companies have to offer that would be similar? Thanks for the help!

1. a disc cover on a cheap rear wheel will be faster and not cause any handling problems compared to an 808

2. Flashpoint, and HED Jet have comparable wheels to the 404 for less

HED Stinger 6 / 9 I think would be the most logical starting point. Much cheaper than ZIPP...still looks great and works just as good.

Keep your eyes on here for a few days and chances are very good you'll get the real thing for a lot less.

Anybody have any experience from the chinese branded wheel hoops that are custom built?

would this be one of those 90% of the performance for 50% of the price type deals?

799 for front/rear 85mm clinchers seems like a tough deal to pass up

A buddy of mine just got his set a few weeks back, loves them. 10 or so rides on them so far and no issues to speak of, but that's not a ton of mileage just yet. He went with the 404ish size and tubulars though. They look and feel like the real deal, super light and the lay-up on them is as good as I've seen on a Zipp or HED. Sweet looking red hubs too.

flaspoint aka sram have the EXACT same rim profile minus the dimples in the 60/80 model. <$1000 for them brand spankin new.

the heds are a bit more expensive, but i kind of like the concept of a fairing attached to an aluminum rim. it seems more serviceable if anything goes wrong. note: the fairings are softer and not totally rigid.

Where can you find brand new Sram 80/60 for under $1000? Best I've found is about $1350.

I assumed he meant each, since Zipps are > $1000 each.

Wow. Those are very nice looking wheels. I am definitely going to keep them n mind when I look to go for a deeper wheelset. Is the 90mm tubular toroidal?

As of now, the only toroidal rims in the line are the UltraSonic 60s.

Get a used zipp 440 for the front, wheel cover for the back. Should be under $400 total. As for having a tubular front wheel and (most likely) a clincher rear- just cope with it. You wanted cheap, right?
