rebuild project: can i upgrade an alu Soloist?
hi everyone -

i ride a ~2004 cervelo soloist (alu). it still does the job, though of course it's geting old. a friend has given me his bike: a carbon soloist from a few years later (06-08?). that frame is irreparably cracked, but has nicer components all around than mine does (and in the same size).

so: how much stuff can i swap from that bike to mine?

-carbon seatpost?
-fork? (my 2004 has a 1 inch steerer)
-cranks?
-can i upgrade my whole transmission from my 9-speed to his 10?
-calipers? brifters? etc etc?

i have a very hilly race coming up and thought it would be interesting to weigh the thing before and after. but i'm also really busy at the moment and hoping to lean on the collective wisdom here rather than on trial and error.

I believe you can probably change over nearly everything. I am not certain about the BB but I know I went from an early soloist carbon all the way to a 2018 S3 and everything has come along for the journey except bottom bracket, but I am pretty certain both 2006 and 2004 used the same BB. Check the head tube length on them since if the newer fork has been cut that might play into things. Good Luck.

thanks! i think i'll be fine on the fork length - he had several (carbon!) spacers on it!

I would just buy a new Shimano 105 R7000 group from Merlin Cycles for $541 and sell the shift/brake levers to get some money back. Then I would buy some Dura-Ace SL-BSR1 bar-end shifters from JensonUSA for $78.

If your bike has a 1” steerer, then I’m fairly sure the fork won’t fit. I think all of the carbon Cervelos were 1 1/8”.

Everything else should work fine. You’ll need a shim for the stem, if you don’t already have a 1.125 stem on your Alu soloist.

Is the Soloist the same as an S1? I have a c. 2010 S1. Swapped over the 9 speed to a 53/39 105 11 about 5 years ago. Not sure which 105 iteration it was.

The knowledgeable here can correct me, but I think the 11 was designed with longer chainstay in mind so when I cross chain (I do ok, get over it some of you, ha) it’s a bit noisy.

She’s retired to the trainer now, mostly, but still sees the road occasionally when I cheat on my main squeeze. I like to show all my ladies the road once in a while.

according to this the S1 which is the aluminum soloist had a 1 1/8 inch steerer tube

so should be compatible with the carbon soloist.

The original soloist had a 1” steerer tube. It changed to 1.125” somewhere around ‘04 to ‘05.

yeah, it's 1 inch, sadly. also, and as important, my current bike has a cinelli alter stem. if you know what that is, you'll know why i'm terribly reluctant to change it. sadly, it's only a 1" and fits old (small diameter) handlebars.

I've got an '05 aluminum soloist. it's got an aluminum seatpost. My memory is that you could get a carbon seatpost for it, but I don't think it's the same as the seatpost for the carbon soloist. but you should be able to tell that one easy enough.

yeah, a dilemma is that the carbon seatpost on the carbon soloist doesn't have the reversible head. so i'd be stuck in a road position.

much as i'd like weight savings, i don't want to change position right before a race! but in the medium term, i could see buying a new tri bike and then rebuilding the soloist as my road race/draft-legal rig.
