quads are trashed -- fastest way to heal?
Got a road race coming up this saturday and my quads are destroyed. Made the mistake of doing an all day hike on saturday and am paying for it big time. going down stairs is difficult and massage is quite painful.

I was planning on riding like normal this week to stay sharp for my race, but since the pain today is just as bad as it has been the past 2 days, I'm second guessing that.

What do you do for your quads/muscles in general to help speed recovery?
Would an ice bath now, 2 days later, still be helpful?
Compression?

Salt bath, ibuprophen, spin the legs, stretch, foam roller. Ice and heat, repeat.

If that doesn't work, throw a virgin in an active volcano.

I'll give the salt bath a go.

interesting you mention an active volcano... I was hiking rincon de la vieja on saturday, which is now the reason my legs are as they are.

+1 on the salt bath. Epsom salt is good stuff. Light spinning on the bike works wonders for my legs as well.

Stretch and walk around. And foam roller. I found epsom salts did nothing for me, but that may be just me.

+1

but if your quads still feel relatively warm (compared to rest of body), avoid the heat and just stick to ice, once they feel normal, then can start adding the heat in. Heat in the acute (early) stages of an injury can actually increase inflammation. Look for a good sports massage or ART session.

Get lots of sleep! Ibuprofen will help too.

Compression probably won't do anything given that you did the hiking several days ago. Salt baths are garbage, though they may make you feel better if you "believe" they will make you feel better i.e. placebo effect.

Interesting. She didn't think mine tasted funny at all.

I believe it has more to do with the magnesium than salt itself.

I generally feel better after a salt bath and stretch. Could be hocus pocus, but I'm able to go again the next day.

How does the magnesium get through your skin?

The skin would absorb it.

I ask because I've never heard an explanation that wasn't a combination of wishful thinking and/or hocus pocus.

The most laughable I've heard to date - the salt in the water sucks the lactic acid out of your muscles. This was a trainer at my gym explaining to a morbidly obese woman how to soothe her sore muscles the day after her first workout in probably 2 decades.

next time put some GU on it!

That guy is an idiot then. There is no definitive scientific proof that it actually does anything. I trash my legs routinely and I tend to feel better after using it coupled with compression and spinning. Probably a placebo effect but I'll take it.

20-30 minutes easy spin every day. Would recommend the trainer as its too easy to NOT take it easy when you're outside and you come to a hill or something else in the road. Nothing the day before the race. Don't walk around or up and down stairs too much, get lots of sleep, eat healthy food, stay off your feet, etc. Massage/foam roller if you have one handy. Basically make it easy for your body to heal itself rather than doing things that might hinder the healing process.

For christ sake, go to the grocery store, spend the whopping $2 for a bag of epsom salt, drive home, put some hot water in the tub and soak in it for 20 minutes while reading a book and drinking some water. Get out, dry off, and see if you feel better. If yes, why question it? If no, then you wasted $2 and 30 minutes of your time. That should be scientific enough.

There is a bit of hocus pocus to almost all scientific "facts".

As for the person asking about saltwater absorbtion when open water swimming, again, I have no scientific proof of jack sh!t, but I think it would have something to do with our bodies having a crap load of salt to match the salt content in most saltwater bodies of water. The dead sea being the oddball which is why we float really well in it.

I believe most people on ST are looking for hocus-pocus. What the OP is asking for gets only one answer....Rest. Rest is the only true answer for how to repair muscle fatigue.
